# Key Numbers for NFL Totals

You probably already know something about key numbers for NFL spreads, and we’ve already written about it, but there are also key numbers for the totals in NFL games.  The table posted below shows the total combined score of the last 5,861 NFL games.  “Number” is the actual total points scored, the “#” shows how many times that total combined score has occurred and the “%” represents the percent of the last 5,861 games that have landed on that number.

You might be surprised to see the 37 at the top of the list, but if you think about how many common NFL scores can land on that number, it starts to make sense (20-17, 24-13, 23-14, 27-10, to name a few).  I was a little surprised to see that 51 and 30 have landed so often (lots of 27-24 and 17-13 games, I’m guessing).  Make note that 41, 44, and 43 are all common numbers, which is why you see so many totals around 42-43.

While I was looking through this data, I came across a few interesting outliers.  Did you know that only two NFL games have ever ended at 3-0?  The most recent was:

11/26/2007 – Steelers 3, Dolphins 0
You might remember this as it was just a few years ago.  It was Monday Night Football and there was about five inches of mud and water on the field.

and then…

12/11/1993 – Jets 3, Redskins 0
I don’t remember this game specifically, but looking at the boxscore, the Jets had 210 rushing yards on 50 attempts and the Redskins had a total of 150 yards of offense for the entire game.

You also may remember the highest scoring game in NFL history:

11/28/2004 – Bengals 58, Browns 48
If you remember this game, it was crazy.  There was over 960 total yards of offense, including 202 rushing yards from Rudi Johnson and 413 passing yards from Kelly Holcomb (in a losing effort, no less).
