Odds to Win the Heisman Trophy

The wait between the end of one football season and the start of the next can be seem like an eternity, especially for those who aren’t big on betting basketball, hockey or baseball. While we are still several months away from the 2013 college football season, oddsmakers have just released their first edition of Heisman Trophy Odds.

To no surprise the front-runner to win the award next year is Johnny Manziel (4 to 1), who became the first freshman to ever win the Heisman Trophy.  No one had Manziel on the Heisman Trophy radar at this time last year, which probably has you wondering why even waste your time looking at these odds now? There’s definitely some risk involved with making a prediction without a single game or practice haven taken place, but this is also the time where you typically find the most value.

There’s a much better chance that one of the players with odds currently available wins the award than another freshman shocking the nation in 2013.  The key to betting these odds early is figuring out which teams you think are going to contend for a National Championship, who also feature a dynamic quarterback or running back who is going to put up big numbers. A quarterback has won this award 11 times in the last 15 years, including each of the last three. Running back is the only other position to win during this stretch.

Georgia’s defensive end Jadeveon Clowney currently has the sixth best odds at 12 to 1 and just might be the be the best player in the country, but you don’t want to waste your money on a defensive player. If there’s one player who could snap the streak of  the quarterback/running back, I believe it’s USC’s wide out Marquise Lee (9 to 1). Another legit threat that isn’t a quarterback and one of my big sleepers coming into the season is Crimson Tide running back T.J. Yeldon.

I’m also not a big fan of picking the previous winner. There hasn’t been a repeat winner since Archie Griffin of Ohio State won the award in 1974 and 1975. If I had to pick four players off the list to win right now, it would be QB Braxton Miller of Ohio State (7 to 1), QB Aaron Murray of Georgia (10 to 1), QB Tajh Boyd of Clemson(15 to 1) and RB Yeldon of Alabama (18 to 1).

Below we have included a table with the all the players who are currently showing odds for 2013. We will continue to update this section throughout the year.
