Alabama vs Auburn Vegas Betting Line & Game Preview
Aside from in-state bragging rights for the next year, on the line in this game is a spot in next week’s SEC Championship Game against Georgia. This game also has massive implications for who ends up playing in the College Football Playoff.
For 9-2 Auburn, the formula is simple. If the Tigers can beat Alabama and then beat Georgia, they should be in the top-4 despite having two losses. However, a loss in the Iron Bowl would certainly knock them out of the picture.
Things are a little different for Alabama. Obviously, if the Crimson Tide win another SEC title, they’ll be in the 4-team playoff. But a loss to Auburn doesn’t necessarily kill their hopes of being in the top-4. However, some people question the strength of Alabama’s schedule, so one loss could be enough to keep them out of the playoff.
Historically, this is one of the greatest rivalries in college football, dating all the way back to 1893. Alabama has had the upper hand in recent years, winning seven of the last nine meetings. Of course, the last two times Auburn won the game, they went on to play for a national championship, which could be a good omen for them this year.
Free NCAA Football Pick Against the Spread: Auburn +4.5
My early lean in this game is toward Auburn. When a matchup is this tough to call, the value is taking the underdog and the points, especially when the underdog is the home team. I actually like the Tigers to win this game, but I’ll gladly take 4.5 points as well.
It’s hard not to be impressed with the way Auburn dismantled Georgia a couple weeks ago. With all due respect to Alabama’s parade of blowouts this season, that may have been the most impressive win in college football this season.

With the way Auburn dominated the trenches on both sides of the ball against Georgia, they can definitely hold their own against Alabama at the line of scrimmage. If the Tigers can contain Alabama’s running game half as well as they did against Georgia, they’ll be in a good position. The same applies to Auburn’s success running the ball on offense.
I also think Auburn could have the better quarterback in this game. Since Auburn’s loss to LSU, Jarrett Stidham has been on point, pulling the strings in Auburn’s offense just the way Gus Malzahn wants. Plus, with the way Kerryon Johnson is running the ball, the Tigers are clicking on all cylinders right now.
Meanwhile, I’m still not sold on Jalen Hurts as a passer. To be fair, he makes big plays when he needs to and has only one interception on the season. But I still don’t know if he can carry the team on his back if the Tide struggles in other areas. Remember, the Auburn defense is likely the toughest defense Hurts and the Alabama defense will face this season. The Tigers haven’t received enough for credit for their work on that sid of the ball.
All things considered, this game has all the makings of one of the more memorable Iron Bowl games. There’s a good chance it ends up being a field goal game. If that’s the case, the smart money is with Auburn and the points, especially since I don’t think there’s much to separate these two teams.
