Boise State vs Utah State Betting Preview & Vegas Game Odds
The Broncos are one of three Mountain West teams still undefeated in conference play, so there’s little margin for error if they want to win a conference title. On the season, Boise State is 5-2 and riding a three-game winning streak, with wins over BYU, San Diego State, and Wyoming. If the Broncos can keep winning, a November date with Colorado State could end up deciding the Mountain division.
As for the Aggies, they’ve endured some ups and downs and enter this game at 4-4. Outside of blowout losses to Wisconsin and Wake Forest, Utah State has been competitive in every game this year, including last week’s 52-28 win over UNLV. If the Aggies can steal a game against Boise State, it’ll give them a huge lift as they try to secure a spot in a bowl game, which was far from a sure thing at the start of the season.

Boise State is not the same team they were a decade ago. But the Broncos are still one of the top teams in the Mountain West. They have a quality defense and they’ve played well on the road all season. That’s enough to convince me that they can win and cover against Utah State.
On the road this season, Boise State has double-digit wins over both BYU and San Diego State, who were ranked at the time. They also went to triple-overtime with Washington State on the road earlier this year. If not for a pick-six in the 4th quarter, the Broncos probably would have won that game.
Meanwhile, Utah State is a modest 2-2 at home this season, so there’s no real home-field advantage. The Aggies let a 4th quarter lead against Wyoming slip away a couple weeks ago and were never really in contention against Colorado State. I don’t expect them to do much better against Boise State.

The Aggies are a competent offensive team most of the time. But not when the competition takes a step up, which will be the case against Boise State. Utah State’s offense was stifled against Wisconsin and Wake Forest, which was not a surprise. But they also struggled against Colorado State, which doesn’t bode well for them against Boise State.
The Aggies also turned the ball over five times during their loss to Wyoming, which is a potential concern for them. With the Broncos giving up 14 points in each of their three conference games, this seems like a game in which Utah State will struggle offensively.
On the other side, the Broncos have a unique situation at quarterback that seems to be working. Brett Rypien starts games but Montell Cozart enters during red-zone situations. It’s unconventional, but it gives Boise State a running threat in Cozart when they get closer to the goal line. It’s a setup that has helped make the Broncos 5-2, and against a Utah State defense that’s average at best, it should continue to work.
Barring something unexpected happening, this is a game Boise State should win by double-digits. The Broncos are a step above the Aggies in talent and they know they can’t afford to slip up and lose a game. I have great confidence leaning toward Boise State in this matchup.
