Cheez-It Bowl Vegas Odds Preview: Air Force vs Washington State

Washington State saw their two game winning streak come to an end their last time out, falling 31-13 on the road against Washington in the Apple Cup. The Cougars fell behind 21-10 in the first half and never recovered, scoring just a single field goal over the final two quarters of the game. QB Anthony Gordon certainly wasn’t at his best, throwing two interceptions and failing to find the end zone through the air. RB Max Borghi led the way on the ground, rumbling for 50 yards and a touchdown on ten carries. As a whole, Washington State averaged a whopping 39 points and just over 500 total yards of offense per outing during the regular season.

The Cougars weren’t nearly as impressive on the other side of the ball this year, giving up well over 30 points and 450 total yards of offense per game. Washington State really struggled to slow down opposing offenses on the ground, allowing 171 rushing yards per game.

Air Force reeled off seven consecutive victories to close out the regular season with a very impressive 10-2 record. The Falcons really played well defensively their last time out, beating Wyoming 20-6 at home for their tenth win of the year. QB Donald Hammond III went 5/6 for 121 passing yards and a touchdown through the air while also adding 35 rushing yards and a score on the ground. Benjamin Waters led the way for the receiving corps, racking up 100 yards and a touchdown on just three catches. Overall, Air Force averaged over 34 points and 400 total yards of offense per game during the regular season.

The Falcons were also quite strong defensively this year, holding their opponents to under 20 points and 325 total yards of offense per game. Air Force was especially strong defending against the run, surrendering under 110 rushing yards per outing.

2019 Cheez-It Bowl Free Betting Pick & Predictions: Air Force -3

There is no doubt that the Falcons were the much more consistent team during the regular season, especially defensively where they gave up over ten less points per game. Not only did Washington State barely mange to grind out a .500 season, they also went a brutal 4-8 against the spread through their first 12 games. The Cougars were absolutely dreadful on the road as well, failing to cover the number in five out of six games away from Martin Stadium. As long as the Falcons are available at -3 or better, I’m more than happy to lay the field goal and roll with the slight favorite to cover the number in the 2019 Cheez-It Bowl.

The Falcons really played well over the final couple months of the season, going a rock-solid 5-2 against the spread over their last seven games overall. Air Force is also a perfect 7-0 outright in their last seven outings as well. On the other side, Washington State is an alarming 3-8 against the spread in their last eleven games. The Cougars also were well below average defending against the run this year, which certainly doesn’t bode well for them heading into a matchup against one of the top rushing offenses in the entire nation. Give me the Falcons to cover!
