Clemson vs NC State Vegas Game Preview & Betting Odds

The Wolfpack are coming off just their second loss of the season, losing 35-14 at Notre Dame. Despite the loss, NC State is 4-0 in the ACC and control their own destiny inside the conference. But they can’t afford a loss to Clemson and still hope to play for an ACC title.

As for Clemson, in addition to playing for a spot in the ACC title game, the Tigers are still hoping to return to the College Football Playoff and defend their national championship. Clemson’s only loss this season was against Syracuse, although they are among the top-4 in the Playoff rankings.

The Tigers got back on track last week against Georgia Tech. A win over NC State this week and a win over Florida State next week will secure a spot in the ACC Championship Game and should keep them in the top-4.

The annual matchup between Clemson and NC State is dubbed the Textile Bowl. The Tigers have won 12 of the last 13 meetings. However, they were lucky to survive last year’s meeting with the Wolfpack. NC State will no doubt be looking for some redemption at home this season.

Free College Football Against the Spread Pick: NC State +7.5

The Wolfpack have had this game circled on their schedule all season, so they’ll bring their best effort against the Tigers. That doesn’t guarantee a win, but it’s enough for me to lean toward NC State, believing that Clemson won’t be able to cover more than a touchdown.

Clemson’s running game is not quite as powerful as the Notre Dame rushing attack that shredded the NC State defense last week. The Tigers are reliant on quarterback Kelly Bryant being an important part of their running game. Bryant looked fine running last week, but he did suffer a sprained ankle earlier this year. He’ll also have the best defensive line in the ACC chasing after him.

The Wolfpack defense looked vulnerable against Notre Dame last week, but I’m expecting them to bounce back. Playing at home should give them a lift, especially when it comes to their pass rush and their ability to put pressure on Bryant. The Clemson offense also hasn’t been quite as potent as it was a year ago, giving the NC State defense a good chance to hold the Tigers to a reasonable point total.

This game could come down to NC State’s offense being able to score against Clemson. The Tigers are giving up just 13 points per game, with just two teams scoring more than 20 points against them. The Wolfpack have some dynamic playmakers that can make things difficult for the Tigers, as Syracuse did in Clemson’s only loss this season. But with Nyheim Hines being questionable to play due to injury, the Wolfpack could be without one of their most important offensive players.

I do believe that Clemson is the better team. However, the Wolfpack may be the more motivated team, and that means something. I’m not convinced the Tigers are more than a touchdown better than NC State, especially with the Wolfpack playing at home. I’ll stick with NC State and the points in this matchup.
