The Detriot Lions host the Atlanta Falcons this weekend in what is shaping up to be a hard-fought battle between a pair of 2-0 teams. Kickoff will be at 1:00 PM EST on Sunday, September 24 at Ford Field in Detroit. The game can be seen nationally on FOX.

The Falcons are currently listed as 3 point road favorites. That line is unchanged from earlier this week, where Detroit opened at +3. The over/under for the game is 49 points. Click here for a full list of the Week 3 betting odds and links to more game previews.

Falcons vs Lions Vegas Betting Line & Game Preview

Atlanta is certainly showing no signs of a Super Bowl LI hangover after their heartbreaking loss to New England eight months ago. The Falcons are off to a hot 2-0 start, with QB Matt Ryan and star WR Julio Jones leading the way yet again. However, Taylor Gabriel, Mohamed Sanu, and TE Austin Hooper have also played significant roles these past couple weeks, as Chicago and Green Bay both manged to prevent Jones from making his first touchdown catch of the year. The RB tandem of Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman has also picked up right where they left off last season, with Freeman already recording 3 touchdown through just two games.

On defense, the Falcons have also played relatively well. Despite allowing a lowly Chicago Bears team to stay close in Week 1, this unit rebounded nicely in Week 2 against a strong Green Bay attack. However, they will be missing top pass-rusher Vic Beasley Jr. against Detroit this weekend, as he is out with a torn hamstring. The secondary will also need to have a strong performance this week after allowing an average of 242 passing yards per game to their last two opponents.

The Lions have also had a great start to the season after recording two impressive victories against the Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants respectively. QB Matthew Stafford has looked fantastic after signing a massive five year, $135,000,000 contract in the offseason. He has spread the ball around on offense very well, with Eric Ebron, Kenny Golladay, and Marvin Jones all recording touchdowns already this year. The running game continues to be led by Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick, with the latter usually reprising his role in the passing game or during key third down situations. Detroit has also looked good on defense, although they have yet to face a real test so far this season. It will be very interesting to see how they hold up this week against Matt Ryan and Co. after somewhat limiting the rapidly ageing Carson Palmer and Eli Manning in Weeks 1 and 2.

Free NFL Betting Prediction: Falcons -3

Only one of these two undefeated teams will head into Week 4 of the NFL season with a 3-0 record. This should be a close, exciting game that may not be decided until the final minute of the 4th quarter. Although I still really like Detroit as a team, especially at home, I don’t think I can avoid siding with the Falcons in this spot. I simply trust this Atlanta team a little bit more after the great performance they have put on over the past several seasons.

I think the Falcons will definitely miss Vic Beasley this weekend, as allowing Matthew Stafford more time to find one of his many skilled pass-catchers downfield is never a recipe for success. However, I just think Atlanta has too many quality weapons on offense to not leave Detroit with a victory on Sunday afternoon. Ryan, Julio, and Freeman are all elite players that rank in the Top 5 of their respective positions across the entire league.

Obviously, Detroit is certainly capable of staying with the Falcons and may manage to scrape out a tough victory at home. I would just much rather side with the team that has a larger sample size of recent success – which is why I trust Atlanta a little bit more in this spot. They have shown no signs of slowing down after their Super Bowl appearance last season (and subsequent 4th quarter collapse). Look for the Falcons to cover the spread and remain undefeated in what should be one of the better games of Week 3.
