Frisco Bowl Vegas Odds Preview: Kent State vs Utah State

Utah State won three out of their last four games to close out the regular season, beating Fresno State, Wyoming, and New Mexico during the month of November to finish the year at 7-5 overall. The Aggies averaged close to 30 points per game on offense, including racking up 38 points against the Lobos their last time out. QB Jordon Love went 18/35 for 172 passing yards and three touchdowns through the air while RB Gerold Bright led the way on the ground with 113 rushing yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. Siaosi Mariner and Caleb Repp also chipped in, combining for two touchdowns on just six receptions. As a whole, Utah State averaged over 425 total yards of offense per game.

The Aggies had their fair share of struggles on defense during the 2019 regular season, surrendering an average of almost 30 points per game. Utah State was especially poor defending against the run, getting lit up for close to 200 rushing yards per outing.

Kent State reeled off three consecutive victories down the stretch to finish 6-6 overall and clinch an appearance in a bowl game. The Golden Flashes really played well their last time out, beating Eastern Michigan 34-26 on the road despite being a five-point underdog prior to kickoff. QB Dustin Crum passed for almost 200 total yards of offense while RB Xavier Williams found the end zone on one of his 12 carries for 79 rushing yards. Kent State averaged just over 27 points per game and over 390 total yards of offense during the regular season, including gaining an average of over 180 rushing yards per outing.

The Golden Flashes were definitely below average on the other side of the ball this year, giving up over 470 total yards of offense and 31 points per game. Kent State really struggled to slow down opposing offenses on the ground, getting torched for an average of almost 250 rushing yards per game.

2019 Frisco Bowl Free Betting Pick & Predictions: Kent State +8

This spread has already moved quite a bit since the Golden Flashes opened around +9, as they are now available at just +8 after plenty of early money flowed in on their side. While I am still leaning just slightly towards Kent State early in the week, I will likely avoid this matchup altogether if the spread continues to shrink prior to kickoff. While Utah State should win this game outright, they really struggled away from home during the regular season. In fact, the Aggies went just 3-5 outright over eight games played on the road/neutral sites. On the other side, Kent State was a very impressive 8-4 against the spread through their first 12 games this year – including covering the number in five out of their last seven games away from Dix Stadium.

It is also important to note that not much appears to separate these two squads on either side of the ball, as both teams gave up around 30 points per game on defense while averaging close to 28 points per game on offense. The Golden Flashes really seem to have peaked at the right time as well, going a rock-solid 6-1 against the spread over their last seven outings overall. I’ll take my chances with the eight points and the underdog in this particular spot – give me Kent State to keep things close in the 2019 Frisco Bowl and cover the number!
