Georgia Southern vs Appalachian State Vegas Game Odds & Betting Predictions

The Mountaineers enter this game nursing a two-game losing streak that’s dropped them to 5-4 on the season. Last week’s 52-45 loss to Louisiana-Monroe was App State’s first conference loss of the season. At 4-1 in Sun Belt play, the Mountaineers are going to need to win out and get a little help if they hope to win at least a share of the conference title.

Meanwhile, Georgia Southern is still looking for their first win of the season. This was expected to be a rebuilding year for the Eagles, but few would have expected them to be 0-8 at this point in the season. The last thing Georgia Southern wants is to go winless this year, and they would love nothing more than to get that win on national TV against Appalachian State.

These two programs actually have a strong rivalry going back to their days as FCS powerhouses. App State has gotten the better of GSU lately, winning five of the last six meetings. The Eagles haven’t won in Boone since 2007.

My first instinct was to take Georgia Southern and the points with this being a rivalry game. But that fact hasn’t helped the Eagles in this matchup the past couple of years, so I’ll lean toward App State. The Mountaineers are definitely the better team, and after losing two straight on the road, Appalachian State will come home with something to prove and beat Georgia Southern convincingly.

To be fair, Georgia Southern nearly knocked off Georgia State last week. But nearly every other game they’ve played this season has been a double-digit loss, so I’m not going to overreact to the Eagles playing one decent game.

What concerns me about Georgia Southern is their lack of identity on offense. Some games they are the run-heavy team they’ve been in the past. But there are other games when freshman quarterback Shai Werts has been asked to throw the ball at least 15 or 20 times. Clearly, neither strategy is working because the Eagles are yet to win a game.

The Georgia Southern defense is also a concern, giving up 38 points per game this season. I don’t see the Eagles matching up well with App State, who has one of the more potent offenses in the Sun Belt. Senior quarterback Taylor Lamb has 19 touchdown passes and just four interceptions this season. He’s also a threat with his legs. Against a questionable Georgia Southern defense, I’m willing to bet Lamb plays one of his better games.

The Eagles will have to play their best to win this game. But chances are slim that they can play well on both sides of the ball against a quality App State team. The Mountaineers will be looking to make a statement against their rivals on national TV. Behind a strong performance from Lamb, Appalachian State will find a way to cover 17.5 points.
