Georgia Southern vs Coastal Carolina Vegas Game Odds & Betting Predictions
Georgia Southern enters their season finale at 2-9 and 2-5 inside the Sun Belt. However, the Eagles have won their last two games, showing some late-season momentum that they’d like to carry into 2018. Those two wins, including a 52-0 blowout of South Alabama, helped Chad Lunsford retain the head coaching job permanently after taking over on an interim basis in October.
Coastal Carolina also enters this game with a 2-9 record. The Chanticleers began their second season at the FBS level with a win over UMass. Unfortunately, that was followed by nine straight losses until CCU was able to knock off Idaho in their last game. That was Coastal’s first ever win as a member of the Sun Belt, and so they’ll be eager to get their second this week.
Free College Football Betting Selection: Georgia Southern -2.5
It’s tough to pinpoint why things have suddenly clicked for Georgia Southern. But in their last two games, they have not looked like that was previously winless on the season. I’m willing to bet that they’re able to keep that going this week and beat Coastal Carolina convincingly. I’ll lean toward the Eagles to easily cover the 2.5-point spread.
For whatever reason, the Georgia Southern triple-option has started to click late in the season. If I had to guess, I’d say it’s a result of freshman quarterback Shai Werts starting to feel more comfortable running the offense, which is a great sign for GSU moving into next year. It’s also a good sign for their season finale with CCU.

On the season, the Eagles are averaging 224 yards rushing per game, which isn’t all that impressive for a triple-option team. But in each of their last two games, Georgia Southern has rushed for over 350 yards, resulting in a total of 86 points. That’s a massive improvement for a team that is still averaging just 21 points per game on the season. If the Eagles stay hot on offense, they’ll be too much for the Chanticleers to handle.
To be fair, Coastal Carolina has managed to stay competitive in most of their games this year. Five of their nine losses have been decided by single digits. That includes a 1-point loss against Arkansas, a game they led by 13 points early in the 4th quarter. However, Coastal Carolina is very much a rebuilding program that is still trying to get up to speed at the FBS level. Even coming off a win, the odds of them keeping a game within a field goal are slim.
In the end, I’m far more impressed with what Georgia Southern has done in their last two games than anything Coastal Carolina has done this season. The Eagles have started to figure out their triple-option offense, and I don’t see the Chanticleers stopping them once they get rolling. Georgia Southern is going to win this game going away.
