Louisiana vs Appalachian State Game Preview & Betting Odds

The Ragin’ Cajuns fell to 5-6 on the season after last week’s loss to Georgia Southern. But Louisiana can still become bowl eligible with a win over Appalachian State. Following NCAA sanctions that forced the school to vacate a couple previous bowl appearances, the Cajuns could use the emotional lift that a bowl game would get them.

Unfortunately, Louisiana is facing questions at the quarterback spot heading into their biggest game of the year. Freshman Levi Lewis was benched during last week’s loss to Georgia Southern. It’s unclear if head coach Mark Hudspeth will go back to Lewis or continue with junior Jordan Davis, who began the season as the starting quarterback.

Meanwhile, the Mountaineers will be playing Saturday with a conference championship on the line. Appalachian State is currently 6-1 in Sun Belt play and 7-4 overall. A win on Saturday will ensure a share of the Sun Belt title with the winner of the Troy vs Arkansas State game, two teams that also enter the final week of the season 6-1 in conference play. This would be the second straight year the Mountaineers take home at least a share of the conference championship.

Free College Football Against the Spread Pick: Appalachian State -14.5

My early lean in this game is toward Appalachian State. Ordinarily, I’d take the more desperate team, which is Louisiana, especially with such a big spread. But with the Mountaineers playing at home with a conference championship on the line, I see Appalachian State playing their best game and winning comfortably.

Despite being one of the better teams in the Sun Belt, the Mountaineers have rarely put teams away this season. However, they managed to do it the past couple of games. The last two weeks, they’ve beaten both Georgia Southern and Georgia State by 21 points each. That tells me the Mountaineers are tending in the right direction and playing their best football late in the year.

App State quarterback Taylor Lamb has been one of the more underrated quarterbacks in the country for quite some time. He’s a four-year starter, and I expect him to play well on senior day. Despite throwing two picks last week, he’s done a great job of protecting the ball this season, throwing a career-low six interceptions.

The Mountaineers also have a consistent rushing attack, gaining over 200 yards per game. Against a suspect Louisiana defense that’s giving up close to 38 points per game this season, I can see the App State offense having one of their better performances of the season.

Louisiana’s quarterback situation also concerns me. Both Davis and Lewis are better runners than they are passers, which is a problem they face. The fact that the Ragin’ Cajuns still don’t know who their best quarterback is at this point in the season is also worrying. On top of that, the Mountaineers give up just 22 points per game and have yielded a total of 16 points over the last two weeks.

To be honest, I worry a little bit about swallowing this many points. However, I don’t see Louisiana having much success defensively. Plus, with questions at quarterbacks, I don’t see their offense keeping up with Appalachian State. With a conference title on the line at home, the Mountaineers will put this game away early and have no problem covering the spread.
