Michigan vs Maryland Vegas Betting Line & Game Preview

A couple of losses to Michigan State and Penn State have taken the Wolverines out of the running for a Big Ten title barring a late-season miracle. But Jim Harbaugh’s team has bounced back and won comfortably against Rutgers and Minnesota the past two weeks. A 10-win season is still within their grasp if Michigan can keep winning behind a solid defense and sophomore quarterback Brandon Peters, who has taken the reigns the last two weeks.

Maryland, meanwhile, would happily settle for just going to a bowl game. Unfortunately, the Terps have lost four of their last five games, dropping them to 4-5 on the season. Maryland needs two wins in their final three games to qualify for a bowl. With an unforgiving schedule down the stretch, a home game against Michigan is a must-win game for the Terrapins.

College Football Free Pick Against the Spread: Michigan -13.5

With Michigan’s erratic offense, I have some pause in picking them to cover a two-touchdown spread. But Maryland’s defense is one of the worst in the Big Ten. The Terps haven’t held an opponent under 30 points since September, so I’ll take my chances with Michigan and lean toward the Wolverines covering on the road.

Peters has played well the past couple of weeks in a pair of Michigan wins. Granted, the competition level wasn’t all that high, but that’s not going to change against the Maryland defense. More importantly, the Wolverines have run wild behind Karan Higdon and Ty Isaac the past two weeks, taking a lot of pressure off Peters. The young quarterback just has to make sure he takes care of the football and avoids turnovers. That strategy should be enough for the Wolverines to move the ball against a porous Maryland defense.

It’s important to keep in mind that Michigan is still one of the better defensive teams in the Big Ten. If you take away their loss to Penn State, the Wolverines are only allowing 14 points per game. Only the Nittany Lions have managed more than 20 points against Michigan this season, and I don’t expect that to change against Maryland.

The Terrapins have a decent running game, but Max Bortenschlager isn’t the type of quarterback I’d expect to have success against the Michigan defense. He’s only completed 51% of his passes this season and he’s not a threat to run the ball. I’d expect the Michigan defense to stuff the box and force Bortenschlager to beat them with his arm. There’s little chance the Maryland can have sustained success against Michigan if Bortenschlager ahs to throw the ball 20 or more times.

After a rough stretch last month, the Wolverines have put their foot down against a couple inferior teams the past couple of weeks. As long as there’s no let down when they go on the road, I don’t see any reason why Michigan shouldn’t beat Maryland by at least a couple touchdowns.
