The #20 overall Michigan Wolverines (2-1) host the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-2) in Week 5 for a BIG 10 East showdown. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM EST on Saturday, September 28th at Michigan Stadium and the game will be televised on the BIG 10 Network.

Taking a look at the Week 5 college football odds, Michigan opened as a 27.5-point home favorite earlier this week. That line hasn’t moved at all after early betting, as the Wolverines are currently listed at -27.5. The total for the game is sitting at 44.5 points.

Vegas Betting Preview & Game Odds: Michigan vs Rutgers

Rutgers lost their second consecutive game last weekend, falling 30-16 at home against Boston College. The Scarlet Knights fell behind 17-13 in the first half and never recovered, getting outscored 13-3 over the final two quarters. QB Artur Sitkowski wasn’t at his best, going 23/33 for 304 yards and a touchdown while also getting picked off once. Raheem Blackshear was outstanding, catching nine passes for 130 yards and a touchdown. RB Isaih Pacheco never really got anything going on the ground, averaging just 2.8 yards per carry on 17 rushing attempts. Overall, Rutgers gained under 400 yards of total offense and scored only one touchdown against a tough Eagles defense.

The Scarlet Knights didn’t have their best outing on defense either, allowing Boston College to score four touchdowns on well over 400 yards of total offense. Rutgers really got exposed on the ground, as AJ Dillon torched the run defense for 150 yards and two touchdowns on a game-high 32 carries.

Michigan also dropped to 2-1 on the season last weekend, getting embarrassed 35-14 on the road against Wisconsin. The Wolverines were badly outplayed on both sides of the ball, as they gave up 28 unanswered points in the first half alone. QB Shea Patterson didn’t play well at all, going just 14/32 for 219 yards and two touchdowns. Patterson also threw an interception and gained negative yardage on the ground. The ground attack basically did nothing all game, as no Michigan rusher gained more than 21 total yards. WR Ronnie Bell led the way for the receiving corps, catching just two passes for 81 yards. As a whole, the offense only generated just over 300 total yards and scored two touchdowns.

The Wolverines were also dreadful on defense against Wisconsin, giving up over 450 total yards and five touchdowns. Michigan really struggled against the run in particular, as RB Jonathan Taylor racked up 203 rushing yards and two touchdowns on a team-high 23 carries.

NCAA Football Betting Predictions & Free Pick: Rutgers +27.5

Until Michigan shows me that they have found a way to turn things around, I want nothing to do with the Wolverines against inflated spreads – especially when I have to lay 25+ points. Not only have they failed to cover the spread in three straight games to open the year, the hoopla surrounding head coach Jim Harbaugh’s job security is a major distraction. Off course, Rutgers is hardly a team that instills a ton of confidence either. However, the Scarlet Knights could easily find a way to lose this game by 20-25 points against a Michigan offense that really can’t seem to get it going this season. It is also worth noting that the Wolverines are now 0-7 against the spread over their last seven games overall.

The Scarlet Knights also seem to play their best against conference rivals, going 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings with opponents from the BIG 10 East. Rutgers is also a solid 6-2 against the spread over their last eight games overall. Michigan is a dreadful 0-4 ATS over their last four conference matchups and are also 0-4 ATS in their last four games at the Big House. Finally, the Scarlet Knights are also 6-2 against the spread over their last eight games as a double-digit underdog. I’m not going to lay yet another big number with Michigan here in Week 5, especially after they couldn’t even manage to beat Middle Tennessee by more than 20 points back in Week 1. Give the Scarlet Knights to cover on the road this weekend!
