This Saturday night the Oregon State Beavers (1-1) will host the Minnesota Golden Gophers (1-0). Kickoff is set for 10:00 EST at Reser Stadium and will be televised on FOX Sports 1.

Oddsmakers currently have the Beavers listed as a slim 2-point favorite with the total set at 51.5 points. Minnesota vs Oregon State Vegas Betting Preview & Game Odds

Minnesota walked away with a 17-7 home win over Buffalo in their season opener. Never really threatening to cover as a 21.5-point favorite. The Gophers scored 14 in the first quarter, but didn’t score again until they connected on a 43-yard field goal late in the 4th quarter.

That wasn’t exactly the kind of performance Golden Gophers fans were hoping to see in the first game under new head coach P.J. Fleck. Minnesota was unable to single out one guy at quarterback and are rotating two guys. That rarely seems to work out well, as it becomes very difficult for the offense to get into any kind of rhythm. Nether really played great in the opener and the Gophers’ rushing attack only managed 3.3 yards/carry against what most see as a bottom tier MAC program.

Oregon State is one of the few teams that have already played two games. The Beavers opened with a 27-58 loss at Colorado State as a mere 3-point dog. They failed miserably at covering the number in game two, winning 35-32 at home over Portland State as a 26.5-point favorite. The Beavers actually looked to be headed for an 0-2 start, as they trailed 28-32 with less than 3 minutes to play.

Turnovers have been a big problem for Oregon State early on. They gave the ball away 5 times in their opening loss to the Rams and 2 more times last week against the Vikings. Defense has also been a liability. They allowed 525 total yards to Colorado State and 515 to Portland State.

A lot of people are going to look at this line and think the wrong team is favored. A big reason for that is the public has been drawn to Minnesota due to them hiring Fleck. They backed the Gophers big in their opener against Buffalo and despite coming up empty handed will likely be back on them here.

While I think Fleck is a good coach and his style will work in Minnesota, I don’t see this being a situation where he excels in year one. More times than not it takes a coach two or even three years to really start to see a big change on the field. There are some exceptions, but given how they played at home against Buffalo team that won 2-games last year, I think they are primed to disappoint.

This is also not your typical road game for Minnesota and the long travel for this game certainly won’t benefit them. On the flip side of this, Oregon State is a team that gained a lot of confidence and momentum with that late score to pull out a win at home. Not to mention the Beavers have 15 starters back from last year’s team, which actually outgained the Gophers 317 to 280 in defeat.

The concern with Oregon State is clearly their defense, but Minnesota is clearly a team they can contain. The Gophers could really struggle to move the ball if they can’t get their running game going on the road. At the same time, I look for the Beavers offense to have some success here. Oregon State is averaging 5.0 yards/carry on the ground and Jake Luton has completed 63% of his attempts.

Go against your gut and roll the Beavers at home in a revenge game against an overrated Minnesota squad.
