North Carolina vs Duke Vegas Spread Preview

Duke Blue Devils (4-3SU , 3-3-1 ATS)

The Blue Devils will be looking to bounce back from an embarrassing 48-14 loss at Virginia, where they came no where close to covering as a 3.5-point underdog.

The Cavaliers opened the game on a 27-0 run and led 41-7 going into the 4th quarter. Virginia’s defense held Duke to just 250 total yards and forced the Blue Devils into making 5 turnovers.

The OVER has been a trendy play in Duke games. After going UNDER in the opener against Alabama, the OVER has cashed in 6 straight games for the Blue Devils.

North Carolina Tar Heels (3-4 SU, 4-3 ATS)

The Tar Heels are coming off a 6-overtime thriller at Virginia Tech. Unfortunately for UNC they came out on the losing end in a 43-41 setback. Tar Heels led the majority of the game, but couldn’t get the stop when it needed late.

Since their shocking 2-0 start with back-to-back upset wins over South Carolina and Miami, North Carolina has gone just 1-4 in their last 5 games. They have also failed to cover 3  of their last 5.

OVER has cashed in each of the last two for UNC and 4 of 6 overall.

Matchup History

While the rivalry isn’t quite the same on the gridiron as it is on the college hardwood, these two teams definitely don’t like each other no matter the sport. Duke won 42-35 as a 8-point home favorite last year, which was their 3rd straight win in the series.

Free College Football Betting Pick & Prediction: UNC -3.5

My early lean would be to lay the points with North Carolina at home. Virginia was my favorite play on the board last week, as I felt Duke was one of the most overrated teams in the country. I just don’t get what people see in this Blue Devils team. At the same time, I think the Tar Heels are easily one of the best teams in the country that own a losing record.

North Carolina is a few breaks away from not just having a winning record, but being a perfect 7-0. All 4 losses they have suffered have come by 6-points or less. Three of those against teams who are currently ranked in the Top 25. I think the 21-20 loss at home to Clemson really speaks volumes to how well the Tar Heels are playing.

All of this has come in the first year with Mack Brown back at head coach and there’s one thing that’s always a big focal point for new coaches, beat your rivals.

I know there will be those looking to fade UNC thinking they will be gassed after that 6 overtime game against the Hokies, but I’m not buying it. I think the Tar Heels are hands down the better team and it’s just not asking much for them to win at home by 4-points.

One last thing, I think people will look at Duke’s poor offensive showing against Virginia and just credit a good Cavaliers defense. However, the Blue Devils have gone 4 straight games now with less than 190 yards passing. They are averaging 176 yards/game on the ground, but are also averagine 43 rush attempts, which comes out to just 4.0 yards/carry. Give me the Tar Heels -3.5!
