The Northern Illinois Huskies (7-3) host the Miami Ohio RedHawks (4-6) on Wednesday in Mid-American Conference action. Kickoff is set for 8:00 PM EST at Huskie Stadium and the game will be broadcast on ESPNU.

Taking a look at the Week 12 college football odds, Northern Illinois opened as a 6-point home favorite earlier this week. That line has shifted by half a point after early betting, as the Huskies are currently listed at -6.5. The total for the game is sitting at 47 points.

Vegas Betting Preview & Game Odds: Northern Illinois vs Miami Ohio

Miami Ohio snuck by Ohio last week to improve to 4-6, winning 30-28 despite almost choking away a 21-point lead at halftime. The RedHawks are currently two games out of second place in the Mid-American Conference East. Defense and special teams played a huge roll in the victory over the Bobcats, as Miami (OH) scored a touchdown on a blocked punt while also racking up six tackles for a loss -including a safety- and three sacks. QB Gus Ragland also played quite well, throwing for 199 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, RB Alonzo Smith rushed for 94 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. As a whole, the offense is currently averaging 28.2 points per game (75th overall). They have been just below the average in the passing game so far this season, averaging 228.1 yards per game through the air (72nd overall).

The RedHawks have been fairly mediocre on the other side of the ball, allowing opponents to score an average of  27.8 points per game (72nd overall). They have been just above average against both the pass and the run, as they currently rank 47th and 60th overall respectively.

Northern Illinois won their sixth consecutive game last week to improve to 7-3 on the year. The Huskies are really firing on all cylinders right now, as they have now scored 35+ points in back to back games. Their most recent victory was an impressive 38-15 result against Toledo. QB Marcus Childers had a big day against the Rockets, passing for 131 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 58 yards and two more touchdowns on the ground. RB Tre Harbison has also played a big part in NIU’s success as of late, rushing for over 300 yards in his last two games combined. RB Marcus Jones had a big day against Toledo as well, racking up 103 yards and a touchdown on just 12 carries. Overall, Northern Illinois is currently averaging only 21.1 points per game (120th overall), although they have been much improved as of late.

On the other side of the ball, the Huskies are currently giving up an average of just 21.0 points per game (25th overall). They have struggled a little bit against the run over their first ten games, as opponents are averaging 245.2 yards per game on the ground (84th overall). However, they have been very strong against the rush, surrendering an average of only 109.6 yards per game (17th overall).

NCAA Football Betting Predictions & Free Pick: Northern Illinois -6.5

This should be a pretty entertaining matchup between two teams coming off important victories in Mid-American Conference play in Week 10. Miami Ohio really shocked Ohio last weekend while NIU continued their streak of impressive play with a big win over Toledo. While both teams have certainly struggled offensively, the Huskies have looked fantastic on the defensive side of the ball. On the other hand, Miami Ohio is allowing 27.8 points per game – almost a full touchdown more than the Huskies. While they have been a bit better on offense, it appears as if NIU has finally come to life as well. With a spread that is currently less than a touchdown, I think the pretty clear value play in this spot is with the Huskies at home.

The RedHawks are just 1-7 over their last eight games against NIU. They are also only 8-17 in their past 25 road games. On the other hand, Northern Illinois is 5-1 ATS over their last six games. They are also a very solid 8-1 over their last nine home games and 7-3 ATS in their last ten games on Wednesday night.

Northern Illinois has almost twice as many wins as the RedHawks do so far this season. Since I don’t even have to lay a full touchdown in this matchup, I’m pretty confident in the home favorite – especially since they are on the verge of winning their seventh consecutive game. They are also 16-7-1 ATS in their last 24 games in the month of November and 4-1 ATS over their last five games following a win. Give me the Huskies.
