Ole Miss vs Mississippi State Game Preview & Betting Odds

The Rebels will try to get back to .500 on the season against rival Mississippi State this week. Ole Miss came up just short against Texas A & M, losing 31-24 at home to fall to 5-6 on the year. QB Jordan Ta’amu was played fairly well against the Aggies, throwing for 189 yards and two touchdowns. The Junior has done an admirable job filling for injured starter Shea Patterson, racking up 1,435 passing yards in just five games. Senior RB Jordan Wilkins has now rushed for 100+ yards in three out of his past four games and is just 99 yards short of 1,000 on the season. Defensively, the Rebels are ranked 113th overall in terms of total defense, giving up an average of 455.7 yards per game – they are also allowing opponents to score an average of over 35 points per game.

Mississippi State overcame a 4th quarter deficit against Arkansas last week to complete a 28-21 comeback victory. Junior QB Nick Fitzgerald was highly effective both on the ground and through the air, passing for 153 yards and two touchdowns while also adding 100 yards rushing and a touchdown. RB Aeris Williams has also been playing extremely well lately, rushing for three touchdowns over his last two games. As a whole, this Bulldogs offense has averaged 32.5 points per game, which is 39th overall. On the other side of the ball, Mississippi State has been dominant all season long, limiting opponents to an average of just 297.2 total yards per game (9th) and 19.5 points per game (20th).

Free College Football Against the Spread Pick: Ole Miss +16

This should be a fairly entertaining game between two teams battling for the Golden Egg. I think that Mississippi State will ultimately win the game, but I like Ole Miss to keep things close for several reason. The Rebels have been playing good football lately, especially on offense where they have averaged 37 points per game over their last four. Jordan Ta’amu has also been extremely effective, throwing 9 touchdown passes over his last three games. Although he will certainly be in tough against one of the top defensive units nationwide, I think Ole Miss should manage to do enough to stay within two touchdowns and cover the spread.

The Bulldogs have also struggled to really blow past weaker opponents lately, beating Arkansas by just a touchdown last week and UMass by 11 points in early November. The Rebels have been keeping their most recent losses extremely close, losing their last two games by a combined eight points. The underdog is also 4-1 ATS over the past five meetings between these two teams, as rivalry games often tend to be tightly contested.

Mississippi State has also already locked up a spot in a bowl game and will likely be primarily concerned with keeping their starters healthy. Ole Miss has now won two out of their last three games and should be highly motivated for this one considering they won’t be playing in a bowl game this year due to a self-imposed ban. Look for the Bulldogs to win this one straight up while the Rebels do enough to keep it close.
