Penn State vs Maryland Game Preview & Betting Odds
The Nittany Lions beat Nebraska last weekend 56-44 after a defensive collapse in the second half. Penn State led 42-10 after two quarters but allowed the Corn Huskers to score 34 second half points to make things somewhat interesting in the 4th quarter. However, the Nittany Lions continued their dominant play on offense as QB Trace McSorley threw for over 300 yards while also adding three touchdowns. RB Saquon Barkley also had a big afternoon, rushing for 158 yards and finding the end zone three times. As mentioned previously, the Penn State defense really appeared to checkout mentally for the entire second half. However, they have looked quite strong almost all season long, limiting opponents to an average of just 16.6 points per game (8th overall).
Maryland hung tough against #22 ranked Michigan State last weekend before coming up just short at the final whistle. The Terps really struggled to get anything going offensively all game long, managing to only score seven points in a 17-7 defeat. Third string QB Max Bortenschlager only managed to throw for 121 yards while the ground attack gained just 83 yards on 31 carries. Things certainly won’t get any easier for Maryland this weekend against a top-ranked Penn State defense. On the other side of the ball, the Terrapins played fairly well against Michigan State, limiting the Spartans to just 17 points. However, they also gave up over 250 yards rushing on 51 carries. Maryland is also giving up an average of 34.5 points per game, which is 108th overall nationwide.
Free College Football Against the Spread Pick: Penn State -21
I still think there is some value to be found on the Penn State side of things in this particular match-up. I fully expect for the Nittany Lions to be motivated after an embarrassing second half performance against Nebraska last weekend. Penn State is more than capable of limiting this woeful Maryland offense to single digits in this one. I certainly don’t expect the Terps to be able to put much more than 10-14 points on the board, even playing at home. Penn State should be able to run all over one of the nation’s weaker rush defenses and cruise to a 3+ touchdown victory.

The Nittany Lions are 15-4-2 ATS over their last 21 games overall. They are also an extremely solid 12-4-1 ATS in their last 17 conference games. Maryland is 7-19 ATS over their last 26 games after an ATS win and just 3-9 ATS over their past 12 games against teams with a winning record. The Terrapins are also only 2-5 ATS over their past seven games overall.
I think this one is definitely shaping up to be a blowout. Penn State will want to reach double-digits wins on the season and make a statement following a sloppy performance in the second half last weekend. Maryland has now lost six out of their last seven games and sits dead last in the Big 10 East at 4-7. This one should be over by half-time.
