Chargers vs Raiders Vegas Odds & Game Preview

Oakland won their first game of the season last weekend after defeating the Cleveland Browns in a 45-42 overtime thriller. The Raiders trailed by double digits several times, including facing a 42-34 defecit with just minutes left in the 4th quarter. Several calls went Oakland’s way, the biggest being a Derek Carr fumble that was returned for a Cleveland touchdown that was eventually overturned. Carr was fantastic against the Browns, passing for 437 yards and four touchdowns. It will be interesting to see if he can keep that momentum going this week against a mediocre Chargers secondary. RB Marshawn Lynch leads the way on the ground for the Raiders, rushing for 300 yards and three touchdowns over his first four games. TE Jared Cook is having a monster year, leading the team in receptions (26) while also racking up 370 total yards and two touchdowns. As a whole, Oakland is averaging 24.3 points per game (14th).

On the other side of the ball, the Raiders are giving up an alarming 30.8 points per game (31st) on 402.5 total  yards. Oakland has been absolutely brutal against the run, as opponents are averaging 139.3 yards per game on the ground (30th overall).

The Chargers managed to get past the San Fransico 49ers last weekend, grinding out a 29-27 victory at home to get back to .500 on the season. The game was much closer than many expected it to be after the 49ers were forced to turn to C.J. Beathard at quarterback. Los Angeles was favored by double-digits but ended up needing to come back from a two touchdown deficit to secure the victory. QB Phillip Rivers looked great in Week 4, passing for 250 yards and 3 touchdowns on the afternoon. Rivers has completed 68% of his passes this season while throwing for over 1,100 yards and 11 touchdowns. RB Melvin Gordon III has put on an absolute show for the Chargers on the ground, rushing for 276 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground while also catching 24 passes for 3 touchdowns. Overall, Los Angeles is averaging 27.8 points per game this season on 403.5 yards of total offense. They also own the 8th best ground attack in the NFL heading into Week 5, averaging 124.8 yards per game.

On the other side of the ball, Los Angeles is currently giving up an average of 30.0 points per game (28th) on 385.0 total yards. They have struggled the most at defending the pass, as opposing teams are currently averaging 275.8 yards per game through the air (20th).

Free NFL Betting Prediction: Chargers -6

I’m fully expecting this to be one the highest scoring games on the schedule here in Week 5, as both defenses have been absolutely atrocious. It looks like Vegas agrees with that sentiment, as this game currently has the second highest total on the board after the Steelers/Falcons matchup. In any even, I still am not sure if I trust David Carr after his resurgence last weekend against the Browns. Gruden had been critical of his play seemingly every week before he finally went off last weekend, and I’d like to see a bigger sample size before trusting this Oakland offense with my money. Los Angeles should be able to have another monster afternoon offensively and while their defense has been brutal, they have at least been marginally better than the Raiders.

Oakland is just 5-11-2 ATS over their past 18 games overall, 1-4 ATS in their past five games in the month of October, and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games in Week 5. They are also just 2-6-1 ATS over their past 9 road games. Los Angeles is 5-2 ATS over their last seven games following an ATS loss. The Chargers are also 4-1 ATS over their last five meetings with Oakland.

The Chargers need to start putting together wins in a hurry if they hope to stay within striking distance of Kansas City in the AFC West. Oakland could easily be 0-4 on the season – I just don’t think they can go on the road this week and be competitive for four straight quarters against a high-flying Los Angeles offense. This seems like it will likely be a 7-14 point win for the Chargers, so I’ll lay the 6 points and take the home favorite.
