The Rice Owls (0-8) host the Marshall Thundering Herd (5-3) this weekend for a Conference USA showdown from Houston. Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM EST on November 2nd at Rice Stadium and the game will be streamed on Facebook via Stadium.
Taking a look at the Week 10 college football odds, Rice opened as a 10.5-point home underdog earlier this week. The spread hasn’t moved at all after early betting, as the Owls are currently available at +10.5. The total for the game is sitting at 47 points.
Vegas Betting Preview & Game Odds: Rice vs Marshall
Marshall won their third straight game last weekend, slipping by Western Kentucky 26-23 at home to improve to 5-3 on the season overall. The Thundering Herd scored 14 unanswered points and managed to hold on to the lead the rest of the way despite getting outscored 23-12 over the final 45 minutes of the game. QB Isaiah Green went 20/31 for 230 yards and a touchdown while also finding the end zone once on the ground as well. Armani Levias scored the only touchdown through the air for the offense, racking up 10 receptions for 77 yards and a score. As a whole, Marshall generated just over 400 total yards in the victory.
The Thundering Herd had an average outing on the other side of the ball against Western Kentucky, surrendering just over 400 total yards of offense and three touchdowns. Marshall really struggled to contain Hilltoppers RB Gaej Walker, as he torched the defense for 102 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just 12 carries.
Rice is still in search of their first win of the season after falling 20-6 at home to Southern Mississippi last weekend to drop to 0-8 overall. The Owls battled hard but couldn’t find a way to get their offense going, scoring just a single touchdown all game en route to yet another double-digit loss. QB Wiley Green went 12/26 for 104 yards and a touchdown through the air but also lost almost 30 yards on the ground after getting caught in the backfield several times. RB Charlie Booker III led the way on the ground despite averaging just 2.8 yards per carry. Austin Trammell played quite well, making five catches for 52 yards and a touchdown. Overall, Rice gained under 150 total yards of offense.
The Owls were pretty mediocre defensively against Southern Mississippi, giving up well over 350 total yards of offense and two touchdowns. Rice had no answer for Golden Eagles RB Kevin Perkins on the ground, as he rumbled for 86 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries.
NCAA Football Betting Predictions & Free Pick: UNDER 47
Even though I do think that Marshall should easily win this game outright, Rice has been surprisingly competitive in most of their games despite the fact that they are still looking for their first win of the season. The Owls have lost by two touchdowns or less five times this year already, including staying within a touchdown of Army and within eight points of #12 overall Baylor. While I still don’t feel confident enough in their offense to take a shot with the 10.5 points in this matchup, I do think that this Conference USA clash will wind up being relatively low scoring. The Thundering Herd have been held to two touchdowns or less three times over the past couple of months and seem to perform much better offensively at home. In fact, the total has gone UNDER in two out of Marshall’s last three road games.

It is also important to note that these two programs have been involved in some relatively low scoring games together in recent years, as the UNDER has come through in four out of the last six meetings between Rice and Marshall. The UNDER has also hit in three out of the last four games that the Owls have played at home. I’ll avoid both teams against what looks to be a pretty efficient spread in favor of the UNDER on 47 total points here in Week 10.
