The Michigan State Spartans (4-6) travel to Piscataway, New Jersey this weekend for a BIG 10 East battle with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-8). Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM EST on November 23rd at SHI Stadium and the game will be televised on FS1.
Taking a look at the Week 13 college football odds, Michigan State opened as a 20-point road favorite earlier this week. The spread has increased by half a point after early betting, as the Spartans are currently available at -20.5. The total for the game is sitting at 44 points.
Vegas Betting Preview & Game Odds: Rutgers vs Michigan State
Michigan State lost their fifth consecutive game last weekend, getting crushed 44-10 on the road against #12 overall Michigan. The Spartans jumped out to an early lead but gave up 17 unanswered points in the second quarter to fall behind the Wolverines for good. QB Brian Lewerke wasn’t at his best, going 17/30 for 166 passing yards and a touchdown but also getting picked off twice as well. RB Elijah Collins couldn’t find much running room against a rock-solid Wolverines defense, rushing for only 27 yards on a team-high 12 carries. Cody White led the way for the receiving corps, hauling in six catches for 78 yards. Overall, Michigan State gained just over 200 yards of offense and only found the end zone once in the loss.
The Spartans had a rough outing on the other side of the ball against Michigan, surrendering well over 450 total yards of offense and five touchdowns. Michigan State had no answer for Wolverines QB Shea Patterson, as he threw for 384 passing yards and four touchdowns.
Rutgers has now lost two games in a row after falling 56-21 at home against #2 overall Ohio State last weekend. The Scarlet Knights fell behind 35-7 early and never recovered, as the Buckeyes tacked on three more touchdowns over the final two quarters of the game en route to a blowout victory. QB Johnny Langan struggled at times, throwing two interceptions and going just 12/26 for 121 passing yards and one touchdown. However, Langan did manage to find the end zone on one of his nine carries for 36 rushing yards. Bo Melton was on the receiving end of the only passing touchdown of the game for the offense, hitting pay dirt despite making just three catches all game. As a whole, Rutgers barely even generated 200 total yards of offense against a rock-solid Buckeyes defense.
The Scarlet Knights were brutal defensively against Ohio State, getting lit up for almost 600 total yards of offense and eight touchdowns. Rutgers couldn’t find a way to slow down Buckeyes QB Justin Fields, as he threw for over 305 yards and four touchdowns through the air.
NCAA Football Betting Predictions & Free Pick: Michigan State -20.5
I’m leaning slightly towards taking the Spartans against the spread in this BIG 10 clash on Saturday afternoon, as there is no doubt that they should win this game outright with relative ease. While their brutal 2-8 record against the spread so far this season is at least somewhat concerning, the Scarlet Knights haven’t fared much better at just 3-7 ATS through their first ten games. The biggest reason why I’m probably going to take a shot with the big road favorite in this matchup relates to how each school performed against Indiana. Rutgers got crushed 35-0 by the Hoosiers back in early October, while Michigan State beat Indiana by over a full touchdown just two weeks earlier.

The Spartans have also dominated Rutgers against the spread in recent years, covering the number in two out of their last three meetings. It is also important to note that Michigan State outscored the Scarlet Knights by an average of just over 28 points per game over that same time span. Rutgers has really struggled against BIG 10 opponents lately as well, going just 1-5 ATS over their last six conference games. I’m going to lay the almost three full touchdowns and roll with the Spartans here in Week 13 – give me Michigan State to cover!
