The #2 overall Ohio State Buckeyes (9-0) head to Piscataway, New Jersey this weekend for a BIG 10 battle against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-7).  Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM EST on November 16th at SHI Stadium and the game will be televised on the BIG 10 Network.

Taking a look at the Week 12 college football odds, Ohio State opened as a massive 50.5-point road favorite earlier this week. The spread has increased by over a full point after early betting, as the Buckeyes are currently available at -52. The total for the game is sitting at 61 points.

Vegas Betting Preview & Game Odds: Rutgers vs Ohio State

Ohio State remained unbeaten on the season their last time out, crushing Maryland 73-14 to improve to 9-0 overall. The Buckeyes scored 42 unanswered points in the first half alone to put the game out of reach early en route to yet another blowout victory. QB Justin Fields went 16/25 for 200 passing yards and three touchdowns through the air while also adding another score on the ground as well. Master Teague and J.K. Dobbins also got in on the scoring parade, combining for 201 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 30 total carries. Garrett Wilson led the way for the receiving corps, hauling in four catches for 82 yards and a touchdown. As a whole, Ohio State generated almost 700 total yards of offense and found the end zone ten times against a shell-shocked Terrapins defense.

The Buckeyes were also solid on the other side of the ball against Maryland, giving up under 150 total yards of offense and two touchdowns. Ohio State was especially strong defending against the run, holding the Terps to just 62 net rushing yards.

Rutgers couldn’t find a way to win their second straight game back in Week 10, falling 38-10 on the road against Illinois to drop to just 2-7 on the season overall. The Scarlet Knights gave up 21 unanswered points in the third quarter and never recovered, losing by double-digits for the seventh time in their last eight games. QB Johnny Langan went just 5/10 for 86 passing yards and a touchdown while also getting picked off once as well. RB Aaron Young led the way on the ground, rushing for 67 yards on 13 carries. Mohamed Jabbie was on the receiving end of the only passing touchdown of the game for the offense, finding the end zone on one of his three catches for 64 yards. Overall, Rutgers gained over 250 total yards of offense in the loss.

The Scarlet Knights struggled defensively against Illinois, surrendering well over 300 total yards of offense and three touchdowns. However, Rutgers did do a decent job slowing down the Fighting Illini passing attack, allowing only 120 yards through the air.

NCAA Football Betting Predictions & Free Pick: OVER 61

While I am also tempted to lay the boatload of points and roll with the chalky road favorite in this spot, I really don’t think there is a ton of value against the spread in this BIG 10 matchup. I’m also always at least somewhat concerned about the possibility of a greasy backdoor cover with the game already well out of reach in the fourth quarter. The Buckeyes have shown a propensity to give up some late points in blowouts this year as well, giving up three second half touchdowns over their last outings. Therefore, I’d much rather take a shot with the OVER on 61 total points scored in a spot where Ohio State could easily put up 60+ points on their own. They certainly showed what they were capable of last weekend, torching the Maryland defense for 73 points.

The Scarlet Knights have really struggled against ranked opponents so far this season, giving up 94 combined points to Michigan and Minnesota. Perhaps most damning for Rutgers is the fact that they lost to Maryland 48-7 back in the first week of October – the same Terrapins team that just lost by almost 60 points to the the Buckeyes. The total has now gone OVER in two out of Ohio State’s last three road games, while they are also a perfect 5-0 against the spread in their last five meetings with the Scarlet Knights as well. Even though I’d also lean towards the Buckeyes against the spread, I’ll stick with the OVER on 61 total points scored in what should be another blowout win for Ohio State.
