The BYU Cougars (7-4) head to California this weekend for an inter-conference clash with the San Diego State Aztecs (8-3). Kickoff is set for 9:00 PM EST on November 30th at SDCCU Stadium and the game will be broadcast on the CBS Sports Network.
Taking a look at the Week 14 college football odds, BYU opened as a 2.5-point road favorite earlier this week. The spread has increased by over two full points after early betting, as the Cougars are currently available at -5. The total for the game is sitting at 40 points.
Vegas Betting Preview & Game Odds: San Diego State vs BYU
BYU won their fifth game in a row last weekend, crushing UMass 56-24 on the road to improve to 7-4 on the season overall. The Cougars scored 49 unanswered points in the first half to put the game out of reach early, cruising to a blowout victory despite giving up three touchdowns during garbage time. QB Zach Wilson went 17/20 for 293 passing yards and four touchdowns through the air while RB Jackson McChesney torched the defense for 228 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just 15 carries. Talon Shumway led the way for the receiving corps, making four catches for 92 yards and a touchdown. As a whole, BYU generated over 600 total yards of offense and found the end zone eight times against a shell-shocked Minutemen defense.
The Cougars had a decent outing on the other side of the ball against UMass, giving up under 300 total yards of offense and three touchdowns. However, all of the damage done by the Minutemen offense occurred over the final two quarters with the game already well out of hand.
San Diego State has now lost two out of their last three games overall after falling 14-11 on the road against Hawaii last weekend. The Spartans gave up a touchdown in the first quarter and never fully recovered, coming up a field goal short despite scoring eight unanswered points over the final 15 minutes of the game. QB Ryan Agnew went 25/39 for 229 passing yards but failed to find the end zone through the air. However, Agnew did hit pay dirt on one of his two carries for eight yards on the ground. Kobe Smith also chipped in, hauling in six receptions for 74 yards. Overall, San Diego State gained over 300 total yards of offense but scored just a single touchdown in the loss.
The Aztecs were very solid defensively against Hawaii, surrendering just over 300 total yards of offense and two touchdowns. San Diego State did have a little bit of trouble trying to slow down Rainbow Warriors WR Jason-Matthew Sharsh, as he racked up ten receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown.
NCAA Football Betting Predictions & Free Pick: UNDER 40
A case could easily be made for avoiding this matchup entirely, as both the spread and the total look pretty spot on for the most part. While I am somewhat tempted by the five points in what should be a slow-paced defensive battle, the Aztecs offense just hasn’t shown me enough to make it worth the risk. San Diego State has now been held to just 41 total points over their last three games combined, so it could be another long outing for them here in Week 14 against a tough Cougars squad. The other concern for me about taking the points and the home underdog involves how both teams fared against Utah State. BYU crushed the Aggies by four touchdowns, while the Aztecs came up six points short.

It is also important to note that these two teams have been involved in their fair share of low scoring battles together over the years, as the total has now gone UNDER in two out of their last three meetings. The UNDER has also come through in ten out of San Diego State’s last eleven games overall as well. I’m going to avoid throwing darts against the spread in favor of the UNDER on 40 total points on Saturday evening.
