The Arizona State Sun Devils (1-0) will host the San Diego State Aztecs (1-0) in a late night showdown in Tempe. Kickoff is set for 11:00 EST at Sun Devil Stadium and will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
Taking a look at the Week 2 betting odds, oddsmakers currently have Arizona State listed as a 3.5-point home favorite with a total of 54.5 points. Quite a bit of movement in this one, as the Aztecs actually opened as a slim 1.5-point road favorite.
This will be the first meeting between these two schools since 2007. Arizona State won that contest 34-13 and have not suffered a loss in 11 overall matchups with the Aztecs (10-0-1).
San Diego St vs Arizona St Vegas Odds & Game Predictions
The Aztecs opened up 2017 with a comfortable 38-17 win at home against UC Davis last week. They had the 25-point spread covered going into the 4th quarter (38-3), but the reserves gave up a couple of late scores to make it look closer than it was. San Diego State had a 513 to 315 edge in total yards and 28-16 edge in first downs.
A lot of people wondered how the offense would fare without Donnel Pumphrey, who rushed for 2,133 yards last year. They didn’t miss him in the opener. The Aztecs rushed for 276 yards and 3 scores, led be senior Rashaad Penny’s 197 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Arizona State wasn’t sharp early, but managed to secure a 37-31 win at home over New Mexico State. The came up well short of covering as a 26-point favorite, but it also wasn’t as close as the final score would indicate. The Sun Devils did have just a 14-13 lead at the half, but would score 23 unanswered to take a 37-13 lead in the 4th quarter. The Aggies added a couple of late scores, including a 29-yard TD pass as time expired.
The offense was led by junior QB Manny Wilkins, who threw for 300 yards and 2 scores on 22 of 27 passing. Sophomore wide out John Humphrey (Oklahoma transfer) impressed in his debut with 7 catches for 123 yards, including a 60-yard TD reception. As for the running game, it wasn’t much of a factor. Kalen Ballage had 79 yards and 2 scores, but as a team the Sun Devils had just 79 yards on 40 attempts (2.0 yards/carry).
Free NCAA Football Pick Against the Spread: San Diego State +3.5
If I was forced to play this one, I would have to take San Diego State and the points. The Aztecs are one of the elite non-Group of 5 programs. With their win in their opener, they are now 22-3 over the last 25 games. Last year they knocked off a Pac-12 opponent in Cal at home. They also defeated Houston 34-10 in their bowl game. This team isn’t going to be intimidated in this spot.

One of the reasons for San Diego State’s success has been their defense, which has allowed fewer than 21 points each of the last 3 years. While it’s not good enough to shutdown an offense like Arizona State, it can at least make some plays and get off the field.
Most importantly, the offense should be able to move the ball with out a ton of problems here. What gets covered up in the Sun Devils win, is they allowed New Mexico State to rack up 549 yards of total offense. That’s more than the Aggies had in a single game last year.
While the majority of the damage came through the air (398 yards), they allowed 151 yards and 5.0 yards/carry against the run. Penny should have another big game here and the Aztecs should be able to control the time of possession and potentially win this game outright.
