The Tulane Green Wave (6-5) travel to University Park, Texas this weekend for an American West showdown with the SMU Mustangs (9-2). Kickoff is set for 4:00 PM EST on November 30th at Gerald J. Ford Stadium and the game will be broadcast on ESPNU.

Taking a look at the Week 14 college football odds, SMU opened as a 4-point home favorite earlier this week. The spread has come down by half a point after early betting, as the Mustangs are currently available at -3.5. The total for the game is sitting at 71 points.

Vegas Betting Preview & Game Odds: SMU vs Tulane

Tulane lost their second game in a row last weekend, falling 34-31 at home against UCF to drop to 6-5 on the season overall. The Green Wave gave up ten unanswered points in the first quarter and never fully recovered despite scoring 24 points in the second half. QB Justin McMillan went 13/27 for 181 passing yards and a touchdown through the air while also leading the way on the ground with 102 rushing yards on a team-high 23 carries. Jalen McCleskey also chipped in, making three catches for 77 yards and a touchdown. As a whole, Tulane generated close to 400 total yards and found the end zone three times on offense despite coming up just short on the scoreboard.

The Green Wave didn’t have a great outing on the other side of the ball against UCF, giving up almost 500 total yards of offense and four touchdowns. Tulane had no answer for Knights WR Marlon Williams, as he torched the secondary for 119 yards and a touchdown on nine receptions.

SMU has now lost two out of their last three games after a tough 35-28 home loss against #24 overall Navy. The Mustangs led 21-10 at the half but self-destructed over the final two quarters of the game, getting outscored 25-7 en route to their second defeat of the season. QB Shane Buechele went 16/28 for 251 passing yards and two touchdowns through the air while RB Xavier Jones racked up 61 yards and a touchdown on a team-high 18 carries on the ground. Rashee Rice and James Proche led the way for the receiving corps, combining for 136 yards and two touchdowns on ten catches. Overall, SMU gained just under 350 total yards and scored three touchdown on offense in the loss.

The Mustangs struggled defensively against Navy, surrendering well over 500 total yards of offense and four touchdowns. SMU couldn’t find a way to slow down Midshipmen QB Malcolm Perry on the ground, allowing him to rush for 195 yards and two touchdowns on 38 carries.

NCAA Football Betting Predictions & Free Pick: OVER 71

Although I’m leaning slightly towards taking SMU against the spread at home in this American West clash, I really don’t think there is a ton of value on either side. Tulane has also been very dangerous against the spread so far this season, going a very impressive 8-3 ATS through their first eleven games. However, the Green Wave haven’t been nearly as solid away from home, failing to cover the number in three out of their last five road games. Even so, my favorite play in this matchup is the OVER on 71 total points scored, as both offenses should find plenty of success in what will likely turn out to be a high-paced, back and forth battle.

Both schools have not performed well on defense through the first 13 weeks of the season, as Tulane has given up 30+ points five times while SMU has surrendered at least 50 points in two out of their last three outings. It is also important to note that these two American West rivals have been involved in plenty of shootouts together in recent years, as the total has now gone OVER in five out of their last six meetings. The OVER has also come through in nine out of SMU’s last eleven games overall. On the other side, the OVER has hit in six out of Tulane’s last nine games as well. I’m going to avoid both teams against what looks to be a pretty efficient spread in favor of the OVER on 71 total points in what should be a very entertaining offensive battle.
