Steelers vs Lions Vegas Betting Line & Game Preview

Despite a couple hiccups this season, the Steelers are 5-2 heading into their bye next week. In fact, the Steelers may be one of the hottest teams in the NFL. Pittsburgh’s most impressive wins of the season may have come in the last two weeks.

First, they dominated the previously undefeated Chiefs on the road, out-gaining them by nearly 200 yards. Last week, the Steelers were even more dominant against the Bengals, limiting them to under 200 yards of offense despite having to settle for five field goals.

The Lions, meanwhile, are in a bit of a funk. Detroit has lost two in a row and three of their last four games, dropping them to 3-3 in a tight NFC North division. Not surprisingly, it’s the defensive side of the ball that’s been Detroit’s downfall lately.

They gave up 27 points to an inconsistent Panthers team and then got shredded for 52 points last week against the Saints. No matter how well Matthew Stafford plays, it’s going to be difficult for the Lions to overcome giving up that many points, even if some of them are being scored by the opposing defense.

Free NFL Pick Against the Spread: Steelers -3

I usually like to stay away from leaning toward road favorites. But I’m going to make an exception because these two teams are moving in completely opposite directions. The Steelers are finding their groove while the Lions are clearly backsliding. If that continues, I have no problem picking the Steelers to cover three points on the road.

The Steelers are actually 3-1 on the road and have played some of their better games this season as the road team. Finishing drives in the end zone has been a problem in recent weeks. But with Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown, the Steelers are having no problem moving the ball and putting themselves in position to score points. Plus, those two are always a threat to take it to the house every time they touch the ball.

Meanwhile, the Detroit defense has been worrisome the past couple of weeks. The Lions have had issues this season against some of the better quarterbacks in the NFL, and most weeks, Ben Roethlisberger still belongs in that group. This could be a tough matchup from Detroit’s perspective.

I also like how the Pittsburgh defense matches up against Detroit’s offense. The Steelers are allowing just 16 points per game, third-best in the NFL. They’ve been particularly stingy over the past month. Even when they gave up 30 points in a loss to the Jaguars, two of the four touchdowns came from Jacksonville’s defense, not their offense.

Obviously, the Detroit offense is more potent than most of the teams the Steelers have played this season. But the Lions haven’t been all that consistent running the ball this season. Plus, with Golden Tate battling a shoulder injury, Detroit’s contingent of playmakers isn’t all that impressive. If the game turns into a shootout between Roethlisberger and Stafford, the Steelers have the more dynamic playmakers by far.

I’d like to give the home team the benefit of the doubt here, but the Lions are just 1-2 at home. They’ve also been dreadful the past two weeks. The Steelers have a ton of momentum coming into this game, and that’ll help them to beat the Lions and cover a 3-point spread on the road.
