The Syracuse Orange (3-3) host the Pitt Panthers (4-2) this Friday for an all-ACC clash from University Hill. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM EST on October 18th at the Carrier Dome and the game will be televised on ESPN.
Taking a look at the Week 8 college football odds, Syracuse opened as a 3.5-point home underdog earlier this week. That spread hasn’t moved at all after early betting, as the Orange are currently listed at +3.5. The total for the game is sitting at 52 points.
Vegas Betting Preview & Game Odds: Syracuse vs Pitt
Pitt has now won three consecutive games after a 1-2 start to the year, beating Duke 33-30 on the road their last time out to move to 4-2 overall. The Panthers held a 19-3 lead at the half and managed to hang on down the stretch, scoring two key touchdowns after allowing the Blue Devils to score 27 points over the final two quarters of the game. QB Kenny Pickett had an up and down outing, going 29/48 for 268 yards and three touchdowns but getting picked off twice. Todd Sibley Jr. led the way on the ground, rushing for 60 yards on 12 carries. The receiving duo of Taysir Mack and V’Lique Carter combined for 116 yards and two touchdowns. As a whole, Pittsburgh generated just under 350 total yards of offense and scored three touchdowns.
The Panthers didn’t have a great outing on the other side of the ball against Duke, giving up almost 300 total yards of offense and four touchdowns. Pitt forced three interceptions but got torched on the ground, giving up three scores and over 100 rushing yards.
Syracuse saw their two game winning streak come to an end in Week 7, losing 16-10 on the road against NC State to drop back to 3-3 on the year. The Orange gave up 13 unanswered points in the first half and never recovered, scoring seven unanswered points in the fourth quarter but still coming up just short on the scoreboard. QB Tommy Devito was 29/39 for 300 yards and a touchdown through the air, while Moe Neal led the way on the ground with just 31 rushing yards. Trishton Jackson had a monster game, exploding for 106 yards and a touchdown on nine receptions. Overall, Syracuse gained just under 350 total yards of offense and found the end one just once against a tough Wolfpack defense.
The Orange were pretty solid defensively against NC State, giving up just over 350 total yards of offense and only one touchdown. Syracuse really did a great job defending against the run, holding the Wolfpack to 126 total rushing yards and not allowing a single touchdown on the ground.
NCAA Football Betting Predictions & Free Pick: UNDER 52
Even though I think that Pitt offers pretty decent value at -3.5, I really don’t like having to lay over a field goal on the road in what should be a close, competitive game. It is also worth noting that the Panthers didn’t exactly blow their opponents out of the water in any of their four wins, as three of them were by a field goal or less. However, if this spread moves to 3 points or less, I would feel comfortable laying the points and siding with the road favorite. However, as things sit now, I actually think that the UNDER on 52 total points is the optimal play in this matchup.

Syracuse has scored 24 points or less in four out of their six games on the season so far. On the other side, Pitt has put up 20 points or less in four out of their six outings as well. The total has also gone UNDER in eight out of the Panthers last ten games overall. That trend has been especially been prevalent when Pittsburgh is on the road, as six out of their last seven games away from Heinz Field have gone under as well. Finally, the total when these two ACC rivals have met at the Carrier Dome has gone UNDER in four out of the past five meetings. Even though I think Pitt should find a way to win this game outright, I”ll stay away from both teams against the spread in favor of the UNDER on 52.
