The #21 overall Maryland Terrapins (2-0) travel to Philadelphia in Week 3 to battle the Temple Owls (1-0). Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM EST on Saturday, September 14th at Lincoln Financial Field and the game will be televised on the CBS Sports Network.

Taking a look at the Week 3 college football odds, Maryland opened as an 6.5-point road favorite earlier this week. That line has shifted by over a full point after early betting, as the Terrapins are currently listed at -8. The total for the game is sitting at 64 points.

Vegas Betting Preview & Game Odds: Temple vs Maryland

Maryland improved to 2-0 on the season last weekend after an extremely impressive 63-20 victory over Syracuse. The Terrapins dominated on both sides of the ball, although it was the offense that got all the media attention after racking up almost 700 yards and nine touchdowns. QB Josh Jackson showed his performance against Howard in Week 1 was no fluke, throwing for 296 yards and three touchdowns. RB Javon Leake had a huge game on the ground, rushing for 107 yards and 2 touchdowns on just seven carries. Anthony McFarland Jr. had a two touchdown performance on the ground as well, rushing for 75 yards on 14 touches. He also scored a third touchdown on a beautiful catch and run play to push his total yardage over the 100-yard mark. It will be interesting to see how the Maryland offense comes out against Temple here in Week 3 after scoring a ridiculous 142 points in just two games to start the year.

The Terrapins defense wasn’t quite as impressive as the offense was in Week 2, but they still turned in a very strong performance against a decent Syracuse squad. Maryland held the Orange to less than 100 rushing yards and no touchdowns on the ground. However, they did allow QB Tommy Devito to pass for 330 yards and three touchdowns, two of which were to Trishton Jackson who racked up 157 yards receiving.

Temple had the week off to begin September after a solid 56-12 win back in Week 1 against Bucknell. The Owls offense wasted no time against the Bison, scoring 35 points in the first half to put the game basically out of reach. QB Anthony Russo was electric, going 32/41 for four touchdowns. On the ground, the duo of Jager Gardner and Re’Mahn Davis combined for 114 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Gardner and Davis weren’t the only pair on offense who had a huge game, as the receiving tandem of Branden Mack and Jadan Blue combined for 247 yards and a touchdown. As a whole, the Temple offense racked up just shy of 700 total yards and scored eight touchdowns.

The Owls defense was dominant in Week 1, as Bucknell barely managed to gain more than 200 yards of total offense and failed to score a single touchdown. Temple was especially tough against the run, as no Bison rusher gained more than 30 total rushing yards or averaged more than 3.0 yards per carry (minimum of five attempts).

NCAA Football Betting Predictions & Free Pick: OVER 64

While I still think that the Terrapins should be able to grind out another win this weekend, I was really impressed by how well the Temple offense performed back in Week 1. I’m also a little bit leery of all the extra time the Owls have had to prepare, as the week off should benefit them immensely. While Maryland has obviously been explosive on offense, their defense wasn’t really tested by Howard and Syracuse showed that it’s possible to expose the Terps though the airĀ  despite getting crushed on the scoreboard. All things considered, I think the OVER on 64 probably offers the most value in this matchup, as this will likely be a back and forth, high-scoring affair that could easily stay close throughout.

Even though Temple should have more success on defense than both Howard or Syracuse had against the Terrapins, I still think Maryland is more than capable of scoring 35+ on the road here in Week 3. Likewise, I also think that the Owls could easily score 30+ after posting 56 to open their season against Bucknell. Both teams have high-flying passing attacks that have already inflicted a ton of damage through the first couple weeks of the season. If the spread drops back down to a touchdown or less, I’ll probably take the Terps to cover the spread instead of betting the total. However, as it sits right now, I don’t want to lay more than a touchdown against an Owls team that could easily give Maryland a tough time on Saturday. The Terrapins are averaging 60+ a game while Temple scored 56 points in their only outing so far this season – I’ll happily take my chances with the over.
