Vegas Betting Preview & Game Odds: UMass vs BYU
BYU won their fourth straight game last weekend, crushing Idaho State 42-10 to improve to 6-4 on the season overall. The Cougars scored four touchdowns in the first half alone and never looked back, cruising to an easy double-digit victory over the final two quarters of the game. QB Zach Wilson went 19/31 for 187 passing yards and two touchdowns through the air while RB Sione Finau racked up 102 rushing yards and a score on the ground. Talon Shumway chipped in with a multi-touchdown performance, finding the end zone twice on two of his five catches for 41 receiving yards. As a whole, BYU gained well over 400 total yards and scored five touchdowns against a shell-shocked Bengals defense.
The Cougars had a solid outing on the other side of the ball against Idaho State, giving up under 300 total yards of offense and just a single touchdown. Brigham Young was especially strong defending against the pass, allowing only 114 yards through the air and forcing two interceptions.
UMass has now lost nine out of their first ten games on the season after falling 45-6 on the road against Northwestern last weekend. The Minutemen gave up three touchdowns in the second quarter and never recovered, getting completely shut out on offense over the final 30 minutes of the game. QB Randall West went 19/36 for 175 passing yards but also got picked off once as well. Bilal Ally led the way on the ground, rumbling for 66 rushing yards on a team-high 16 carries. Brennon Dingle also contributed, hauling in four receptions for 66 yards. Overall, UMass generated well over 300 total yards of offense but failed to find the end zone against a tough Wildcats defense.
The Minutemen were terrible defensively against Northwestern, getting torched for over 400 total yards of offense and five touchdowns. UMass had no answer for Wildcats RB Evan Hull, as he exploded for 220 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 24 carries.
NCAA Football Betting Predictions & Free Pick: BYU -39.5
Despite the fact that I’m always somewhat leery of backdoor covers during garbage-time in matchups involving 35+ point favorites, I just don’t see how I can get behind a UMass squad that is an embarrassing 1-9-1 against the spread through their first 11 games. BYU has already shown they are capable of putting up points in a hurry against weak defenses, as they scored 40+ points against both Utah State and Idaho State. Of course, it isn’t exactly like the Cougars scream value, as I would probably avoid both sides against the spread if the number moves above 40 points prior to kickoff. Still, with the way things sit now, Brigham Young should be able to find the end zone enough times to grind out a road cover against one of the worst teams in the entire nation.

It is also important to remember that a very weak Northwestern offense still found a way to score 45 points against the Minutemen, which certainly doesn’t bode well for UMass here in Week 13. BYU has also dominated this particular matchup in recent years, covering the number in two out of the last three meetings between these Independent programs. I’m going to lay the boatload of points and take a shot with the massive road favorite on Saturday afternoon – give me the Cougars to cover!
