Vikings vs Steelers Game Preview & Betting Odds

The Vikings looked fantastic on Monday Night Football, as they beat the New Orleans Saints 29-19. QB Sam Bradford threw for 346 yards and 3 touchdowns, while the dynamic duo of Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen combined for 250 yards receiving and 2 TD’S. Rookie RB Dalvin Cook was great in his debut, electrifying the home crowd with several long bursts and breaking Adrian Peterson’s record for most yards by a Viking Rookie in their debut (127 yards). On the other side of the ball, the Vikings defense frustrated Drew Brees and Co. for much of the game – especially in the red zone. Minnesota forced the Saints to kick three field goals from under 25 yards, and didn’t allow a touchdown until there was just 1:56 left in the 4th quarter. Star cornerback Xavier Rhodes basically shut-down Saints WR Michael Thomas, limiting him to just 5 receptions for 45 yards.

Pittsburgh really struggled in their opener, barely beating the lowly Cleveland Browns 21-18 in a divisional match-up. Le’Veon Bell clearly looked rusty after his extended holdout before the start of the 2017 season. QB Ben Roethlisberger also looked below average despite throwing for two touchdowns and 263 yards. He missed many throws that he usually makes look easy, and allowed Cleveland to stay in this game right until the very end. Antonio Brown picked up some of the slack for the offense, racking up 11 receptions for 182 yards. The Steelers defense also looked strong, as they posted seven sacks and held the Browns to less than 50 yards rushing.

Free Pro Football Pick Against the Spread: Vikings +6.5

Earlier in the week, I likely would have recommended taking Pittsburgh in this spot – especially with the concerns over Sam Bradford and his often-injured left knee. However, with the spread increasing to 6.5 points and the recent news that Bradford appears to be fine, I think taking the Vikings on the road (and the 6.5 points) offers a fairly decent value.

The current total on this game is 45, which is pretty low. Many signs point to this being a tight, defensive battle – especially when looking at the history of previous meetings between these two teams.

The Vikings defense certainly looked solid on Monday night, and I expect them to make life difficult for the Steelers offense all afternoon long. The battle between Xavier Rhodes and Antonio Brown should be exciting to watch, and I expect for Brown to be at least somewhat held in check. Martavis Bryant certainly has dynamic ability as well, but Minnesota didn’t really allow Ted Ginn Jr. to really hurt them last week after shutting down Thomas.

Minnesota has shown that they have a much more balanced attack this season with the addition of Cook. Diggs and Thielen will likely take a step back after such outstanding performances in Week 1, but there is no reason that both still can’t have solid games. It will be interesting to see how Bradford’s knee holds up, but all pre-game reports are suggesting that the Vikings are cautiously optimistic that there will be no lingering problems.

I definitely think that Minnesota has the talent to win this game straight up. I don’t really expect that to happen, but in a game with a low total where both teams have a realistic opportunity to win, I don’t see how I can leave 6.5 points on the board. Look for the Steelers to eventually grind out a narrow victory, while the Vikings look solid yet again and easily cover.
