This Saturday the Boston College Eagles will host the Virginia Tech Hokies in what will be both the conference and season openers for both sides. Kickoff is set for 4:00 EST at ALumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill and will be televised on the ACC Network.
Oddsmakers opened up with the Hokies as a slim 2.5-point road favorite. The line has since crossed multiple key numbers and is now Va Tech -4.5. The total opened at 57 and that’s where it sits today.

Virginia Tech vs Boston College Game Odds & Betting Predictions
Virginia Tech Hokies
The deck was stacked against the Hokies in 2019 from the start and it only got worse. Virginia Tech had little to no experience back on defense and then had several guys go down with injury. It’s how you go from giving up 14.8 ppg to allowing 31.0 ppg.
Even though they lost their bowl game, Justin Fuente deserves a lot of credit for getting this team to the postseason. For me it only furthered by respect for him as a coach. I would be shocked if he doesn’t have Virginia Tech back in that 9-10 win range and competing for the ACC Coastal title.
There’s a lot to like, as the Hokies return 16 starts (6 offense, 10 defense). That includes junior quarterback Ryan Willis, who impressed in his first year here after transfering from Kansas.
Boston College Eagles
You have to start asking yourself what is the ceiling at BC under head coach Steve Addazio. In the 6 years he’s been with the Eagles, they have finished with 7-wins 5 times. The lone exception being an ugly 3-9 campaign in 2015. Last year they were 7-5 (bowl game against Boise State cancelled) with a 4-4 mark in ACC play. Started out the season 7-2.
While Addazio is excited about the potential on offense with the return of running back A.J. Dillon and quarterback Anthony Brown, only 9 starters return in total (6 offense, 3 defense). They also will be in the first year of both a new offensive and defensive coordinator.
I have to wonder what it’s like for teams like Boston College, who because they play in the same division as Clemson go into the year not even being able to think about a conference title. Is there enough motivation to just get to a bowl?
These two teams played last year at Virginia Tech and the Eagles turned a 14-7 halftime deficit into a 31-21 win. Boston College was a 2-point road favorite and the total for that game was 52. Hokies had won the previous 3 meetings. Home team has now lost 4 of the last 5 in the series.

My early lean here would be on the Hokies to win and cover at Boston College. I just feel like that the Hokies are the more complete team and are flying a bit under the radar to start out 2019. You can see how much respect the books have for this team, given they were a 2-point home dog to the Eagles at the end of last year and are now laying points on the roads.

I get the excitement around the BC offense with all their playmakers back, but you never really know how it’s going to go when you change up the offense. Bajakian was a quarterback coach the last 4 years in the NFL (Bucs). He did serve as the OC at Tennessee in 2013 and 2014. However, the offense regressed by 12.4 ppg (36.2 ppg to 23.8 ppg) in his first year and got better by 6.3 ppg when he left (28.9 ppg to 35.2 ppg).
Needless to say, I’m not convinced the Eagles offense is going to be humming along to start the year. I also think they are matched up here against a talented and hungry Hokies defense that will be out to make a statement.
I also feel like Boston College’s defense is headed in the wrong direction. Eagles only return 3 starters from a unit that gave up over 400 ypg for the first time in 5 years. It’s been a decline every year in yards allowed since the great Don Brown left to be the DC at Michigan in 2015.
That first road game in conference play can be a challenge for a lot of teams, but Virginia Tech has thrived in this spot. Hokies are 13-2 in their last 15 ACC road openers. That includes a 24-3 win at Florida State to open last year. Va Tech easily covered as a 7-point dog. I think they win here by 10+ rather easily. Give me the Hokies -4.5!
