Taking a look at the Week 7 college football odds, West Virginia opened as a 9-point home underdog earlier this week. That spread has increased by a full point after early betting, as the Mountaineers are currently listed at +10. The total for the game is sitting at 53.5 points.
Vegas Betting Preview & Game Odds: West Virginia vs Iowa State
Iowa State got back above .500 overall on the season last weekend after a very impressive 49-24 home victory over visiting TCU. The Cyclones were up 21-3 in the second quarter and never looked back, adding four more touchdowns in the second half. QB Brock Purdy played well, going 19/24 for 247 yards and two touchdowns while also leading the way on the ground with 102 rushing yards and another two scores. RB Johnnie Lang had a multi-touchdown performance as well, finding the end zone twice and receiving a team-high 16 carries. WR Deshaunte Jones also had a big outing, racking up 10 receptions for 110 yards. Overall, Iowa State generated well over 400 total yards of offense and scored six touchdowns against a shell-shocked Horned Frogs defense.
The Cyclones defense was fairly average against TCU, giving up well over 300 total yards of offense and three touchdowns. Iowa State really struggled to contain Horned Frogs WR Jalen Reagor, who burned the secondary for 69 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
West Virginia saw their modest two game winning streak come to a close in Week 6, losing 42-31 at home to #11 overall Texas to drop back to 3-2 on the season overall. The Mountaineers trailed by a touchdown at the half and never fully recovered, getting outscored 21-17 over the final 30 minutes of the game. QB Austin Kendall had a very up and down game, passing for 367 yards and three touchdowns but also throwing a season-high four interceptions. Kendall also found the end zone on the ground, although no WVU rusher gained more than 30 total yards against a tough Longhorns run defense. T.J. Simmons had a monster game to lead the way for the receiving corps, exploding for 135 yards and a touchdown on seven catches. As a whole, West Virginia gained over 450 total yards of offense and scored four touchdowns despite coming up well short on the scoreboard.
The Mountaineers had a tough outing defensively against Texas, giving up well over 400 total yards of offense and six touchdowns. West Virginia was especially bad defending against the run, as Roschon Johnson and Sam Ehlinger combined for 166 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
NCAA Football Betting Predictions & Free Pick: OVER 53.5
This spread currently looks extremely efficient to me, as Iowa State should be able to win this game outright with relative ease while West Virginia will likely find a way to stay within two scores. I don’t really want to play the guessing game and take a stab with either school in this particular spot, as I’m not feeling confident about taking the points with the Mountaineers either. However, I do think that there is a lot of value with the OVER on 53.5, as both of these offenses have scored at least 31 points in two out of their last three games. They haven’t exactly been defensive powerhouses either, as the Mountaineers have given up 38+ points in two out of their last four outings while the Cyclones have allowed 20+ points in three out of their last four games overall.

While Iowa State hasn’t really been trending towards the OVER as of late, West Virginia has been involved in plenty of shootouts in recent history. Not only has the OVER come through in eight out of their last 11 games overall, it has also hit in five out of their last six home games. The same can be said about their recent BIG 12 matchups, as the total has gone OVER in seven straight games where the Mountaineers faced a conference opponent. I think this game should stay relatively close throughout, with plenty of offense on both sides. I’ll avoid both sides against the spread and instead play the OVER on 53.5 total points scored.
