The 2019 Belmont Stakes will be the 151st running of the oldest Triple Crown event. The race will take place at Belmont Park in New York and is scheduled for Saturday, June 8.

Unlike the Kentucky Derby, where there’s a buzz around the event no matter what the circumstances are, the excitement for the Belmont depends on the outcome of the first two races. If there’s not a horse that has won the first two legs at Churchill Downs and Pimlico, the atmosphere simply isn’t the same at Belmont Park.

The last two horses to come in with a chance to win the Triple Crown have delivered the goods with Justify last year and American Pharoah in 2015. When American Pharoah won, he was the first two accomplish the feat since Affirmed in 1978. It snapped a streak of 13 straight times that the winner of the Derby and Preakness failed to win the final leg.

This year that buzz won’t be there, as Kentucky Derby winner, Country House, didn’t even race at the Preakness Stakes.

Belmont Betting Odds: Favorites & Top Contenders

Two key factors that you need to look at with this race is the demanding 1.5-mile distance and not every horse racing in all three events.

This race is 1/4 a mile longer than the Derby and 5/16 of a mile further than that of the Preakness. Many of the horses who don’t do well in the Kentucky Derby, skip the Preakness to rest up for this race. There’s also some horses who take both of the first two legs off to give their best effort at this event.

As of right now, there are 9 horses who are listed with odds to win the race. While the fields for this race are typically not a lot, this is on the small end of entrants.

The odds on favorite to win the race is Tacitus, who is listed at 7/4 (+175). Tacitus finished 3rd at the Kentucky Derby, but did not run at the Preakness Stakes.

Without a doubt the biggest threat to Tacitus is War of Will, whose odds are just slightly worse at 5/2 (+250). After finishing 7th at the Kentucky Derby, War of Will went on to win the Preakness Stakes.

No other horse in the field has odds better than 8 to 1, which is where you find both Everfast and Master Fencer. There’s another small gap until you find Intrepid Heart and Sir Winston at 12/1. That leaves Spinoff at 16/1, with Joevia and Tax sharing the worst odds to win at 20/1.

For a more in-depth look at the horses in action, here’s a breakdown of the contenders in the field.
