A futures ticket that survived to the final round puts you one game from a full payout or nothing. The question is how much to bet on the other side right now to walk away with a guaranteed profit either way.

The answer depends on your original stake, the odds you got on the ticket, and the current price on whoever stands between you and that payout. Enter those three numbers and the hedge amount, locked profit, and half-hedge option come right out.

Entering Your Stake, Ticket Odds, and the Opponent’s Price

Start with the stake on your futures ticket, the amount you originally risked. Next enter the odds you got on that ticket, the price that’s now sitting there looking either great or shaky depending on how the bracket broke.

Then enter the odds on the other side right now, meaning whomever your team has to beat. That’s usually the opponent in the final or title game, priced fresh off today’s market.

The result shows what your ticket pays if it wins, how much to bet on the other side to hedge completely, the profit that locks in no matter who wins, and a half-hedge option for splitting the difference.

How $50 at +2500 Turns Into a $540.91 Lock

Take a $50 stake on a ticket priced at +2500. That ticket pays $1,300.00 if it hits, stake times decimal odds.

The other side is now priced at -120. Divide that $1,300.00 payout by the decimal odds on -120 and you get $709.09, the amount to bet on the opponent so both outcomes return the same dollar figure.

Win with the original ticket and you collect $1,300.00, having laid out $50 plus $709.09 in hedge money, a profit of $540.91. Lose the ticket and the $709.09 hedge bet pays out the same $540.91 profit. That’s the locked number either way.

Hedge half instead, $354.55, and the outcomes split. If the ticket hits you keep $895.45, and if it doesn’t you’re still up $245.45 rather than losing the full original stake.

Deciding Whether to Hedge All, Half, or Nothing

This math matters most when a longshot futures ticket has run all the way to a final or a title game and the payout has grown far bigger than the original risk. At that point you’re not betting for fun anymore, you’re managing money.

The common mistake is either hedging too early, before the price on the other side reflects real value, or not hedging at all and treating the whole thing as a coin flip for pride. Another mistake is applying this math when more than two outcomes remain, since a three-team futures market needs a separate hedge built for each remaining team.

A sharp bettor usually splits the difference. Hedging half locks in real profit no matter what happens while still leaving room to cash the full ticket if the original pick comes through. Full hedges make sense when the other side’s price offers a locked number close to what the ticket would pay outright.

Futures Hedging Questions Worth Answering

Does hedging always guarantee the same profit no matter which side wins? Only if you hedge the full payout amount using the current odds on the other side, the way the calculator’s main hedge figure works. Anything less, like the half option, means the two outcomes pay different amounts.

What if my futures ticket still has more than two teams alive? This calculator only handles two-outcome situations, so a ticket with three or more live teams needs a separate hedge calculated for each one individually.

How is the hedge bet size actually calculated? It’s the ticket’s payout divided by the decimal odds on the other side, which is the exact bet size that returns that same payout amount regardless of outcome.

Is hedging half better than hedging the whole thing? It depends on your risk tolerance. A full hedge locks one flat profit no matter what happens, while a half hedge keeps a bigger reward alive if your original pick wins, at the cost of a smaller profit if it loses.
