Why -7.5 and -7.5 Pays $183.33
The payout starts with the card. A two-team six-point teaser at the standard -120 price turns a $100 stake into $83.33 profit, for a total payout of $183.33. That price also sets your break-even point: take the implied probability of -120, then raise it to the power of 1 divided by the number of legs, and you get 73.9% per leg. That’s the win rate you need on each side of the tease for the bet to pay off long term.
The key numbers work separately from the payout math. Take a leg at -7.5 and tease it six points to -1.5. That move crosses both 3 and 7, the two spreads where NFL games finish more than any others. Do that on both legs of a two-team six-pointer and you’ve built what’s known as a Wong teaser, moving through both numbers on every side of the bet.
Chasing the Key Numbers, Not Just the Points
A teaser only has an edge when the extra points cross real numbers. Moving a spread from -7.5 to -1.5 crosses both 3 and 7. Moving a spread from -3.5 to 2.5 only crosses 3 once and misses 7 completely. Same six points, very different value, because the games clustering at 3 and 7 are exactly what the tease is designed to buy you through.
The common mistake is teasing games that were never near a key number to begin with, or teasing a big favorite from -12 down to -6, which crosses 7 but skips 3 and still leaves you a two-score dog if the game doesn’t cooperate. A sharp bettor builds the tease around the numbers first and the payout second. Check what each leg crosses before you check what the card pays, then compare the break-even percentage against how confident you actually are in both sides landing favorably.
Teaser Payouts, Key Numbers, and Common Sticking Points
Why do 6.5 and 7 point teasers pay worse than a 6 point tease? Books charge more for the extra half point or full point because it increases the odds you land favorably on a close number, so the price moves against you to keep their edge intact.
