I run every bet through two screens now, my sportsbook app and Kalshi, before I decide where the money actually goes.

Which one wins isn’t about picking a side and sticking with it. It comes down to what kind of bet I’m making that week.

Contracts, Not Odds: How Kalshi Prices Actually Work

Kalshi prices aren’t odds with juice baked in. They’re contracts that settle at a dollar if you’re right and nothing if you’re wrong, so the price itself is the implied probability, nothing hidden in it.

On Kalshi’s Week 7 NFL moneyline board, 14 games compared on Oct. 20, 2026, the average price gap against sportsbook-implied prices worked out to just 1 cent per contract.

Over the six most recent weeks tracked, that gap held in a tight 0.7-to-1-cent band every single week, Weeks 2 through 7. Small, but real money if you’re consistently finding the right side.

Where Kalshi Beats the Book on Dog Moneylines

Take the Thursday Oct. 22 game, New England at Chicago. New England was a +124 underdog, and Kalshi’s ask on them sat at 41 cents against a 42.8-cent sportsbook-implied fair price. That gap is value sitting right there for anyone backing the dog.

Chicago, the favorite in that same game, actually went the other way. The sportsbook price was 2.3 cents cheaper to buy than Kalshi’s, so the edge only ran one direction.

That pattern shows up most weeks given the steady 0.7-to-1-cent gap trend running through the season. I check the dog price on both boards before I lay a moneyline bet now, because that cent or two adds up over a full slate.

Where Kalshi Beats the Book on a Live Futures Hedge

Once I’m holding a futures ticket and the number has moved my way, I want the option to get out early, not just sit and wait for the final result.

Kalshi lets me place a sell order into the market before the event resolves, which turns a frozen position into one I can actually trade while it’s live.

A sportsbook ticket doesn’t give me that. It sits locked until the game or the season plays out, win or lose. That flexibility is worth something the moment a futures bet turns profitable mid-run.

Why the Book Still Owns Teasers

None of this helps once I want to tease a game. A teaser shifts the spread or total several points in my favor for a reduced payout, and the whole point is buying through the key NFL margins of three and seven points.

There’s no Kalshi contract built for that. Exchanges don’t offer a parlay-style product at all, so there’s nothing on the other board to even compare a price against.

When I want to tease, the sportsbook is the only place that product exists.

Why the Book Still Owns Key-Number Spreads

Kalshi’s spread contracts aren’t built like a sportsbook line either. They self-certified football point-spread contracts in August 2025 around a template asking whether a team wins by above, below, between, exactly, or at least some count of points.

That’s a threshold bet, not one clean number like a standard -3 at a set price. If I need a specific key number, say buying -3 instead of -3.5, the book hands me that number directly.

Kalshi makes me bet around a range instead of on the number itself, which is a different bet entirely when the margin matters.

Why the Book Still Wins When the Market’s Too Thin

Volume matters as much as price. The Thursday NE-CHI game traded about 525,986 contracts on Kalshi’s board. The TB-CAR game that same week traded only around 30,236, even though Carolina still showed a 1.6-cent discount to the sportsbook-implied price.

A discount doesn’t mean much if there’s nobody on the other side to fill your order at that price. Per-trade fees eat into it further on thin boards too. Kalshi’s taker fee is round-up of 0.07 times contracts times price times one minus price, and as of Oct. 10, 2026 NFL and NBA games even charge resting maker orders a 0.0175 rate instead of the usual free fill.

Access isn’t guaranteed everywhere either. Connecticut sued Kalshi in 2026 after the state’s Gaming Division ordered it to stop offering sports wagers to residents, and the Sixth Circuit ruled against Kalshi in its Ohio and Tennessee cases, rejecting its argument that these contracts are federally preempted swaps. Legal footing stayed unsettled in some states as of late September 2026.

My Rule of Thumb Between the Two

Dog moneylines and live futures hedges go to Kalshi. Teasers and key-number spreads stay with the book. Anything on a thin board gets priced on both before I touch it.

Total contracts on Kalshi’s NFL board swung from about 34.0 million in Week 5 down to roughly 2.4 million for the Week 7 snapshot, which tells me liquidity itself moves week to week, not just the price.

That tight 0.7-to-1-cent gap most weeks is really the proof neither side is leaving much on the table. The edge isn’t in picking a loyalty, it’s in knowing which bet type you’re making before you place it.
