How to Read the NFL Odds
NFL betting odds are shown in three main formats: moneylines, point spreads, and totals (over/unders).
The moneyline is the simplest. It shows which team is favored and what the payout will be if they win outright. A favorite might be listed at -150, meaning you must risk $150 to win $100, while an underdog at +130 pays $130 on a $100 bet if they pull the upset.
The point spread is designed to level the playing field. The favorite will have to win by more than the listed number (for example, -3.5) to “cover” the spread, while underdog bettors win if their team loses by less than that margin or wins outright.
The total, or over/under, sets the expected combined score of both teams. Bettors simply choose whether the final score will go over or under that number. For example, if the line is 46.5, an outcome of 27–24 would go “over” since the total points equal 51.
