DROY Favorites & Contenders for 2023
Will Anderson
It’s no shock that Will Anderson out of Alabama is the favorite to start the season. The outside linebacker was picked third overall by the Houston Texans where they’ll line him up on the outside and use him in a similar way to Nick Bosa. If the secondary can hold up and give him some time I see Anderson crashing the edges and getting to the quarterback frequently.
Jalen Carter
The Philadelphis Eagles got themselves another Georgia Bulldog on the defensive side of the ball and the 9th overall pick couldn’t have landed in a better spot. He’ll be teaming up with former Bulldogs Jordan Davis and Nakobe Dean again which should help him adjust to life in the NFL. He’s very talented and this Eagles team should be very good again this year, making him a clear contender for DROY.
Devon Witherspoon
The Seattle Seahawks took Witherspoon with the fifth pick. He hails from Illinois and should help Seattle get back to the Legion of Boom days. The Seahawks allowed nine receiving touchdowns of 20+ yards and were second worst in the league with 6.1 yards after the catch. The physical corner should help both cateoriges and if he does, could be a serious contender.
Christian Gonzalez
The New England Patriots couldn’t pass up the chance to boost their secondary with conerback Christian Gonzalez out of Oregon. He has speed, agility, and size to be able to cover almost anyone. He didn’t pick off any passes in 2020 or 2021, but don’t let that fool you. I personally think he’ll have a tough go of it going against the talented receivers in the AFC East, but he’s in a position to showcase his abilities.
Tyree Wilson
The Las Vegas Raiders selected the 6’6″ Wilson with the seventh pick in the draft and should give the Raiders another pass rushing option outside of just Maxx Crosby. He genered pressure on 18% of his pass rushes last year, which was the second-highest in CFB. His size and versatility means Vegas can move him around in the scheme and make an impact from Day 1.
