Some of the quality wins last season came against Oklahoma, West Virginia, Oklahoma State and Texas.  The win over Oklahoma was the most impressive as the Wildcats picked up that victory on the road.  Kansas State’s second most impressive win was a 42-24 blowout against Texas.  Although that game was played at home they still managed a three score victory against a very good team.

The outlook for the upcoming season may not be so bright.  They lost key players and will have a hard time filling those voids.  They have a relatively easy schedule in conference play with the exception of road games against Texas and Oklahoma State.

The three opening games for Kansas State should be easy victories.  They should be able to find their weaknesses and make the necessary adjustments after those games.  If they can’t it could end up being a very long season in conference play.

Games against Texas and Oklahoma State will be played on the road.  The preseason odds have the Wildcats as a 9 point underdog in both of those games.  Oklahoma State is projected to be not only the best team in the Big 12 but one of the best in all of college football.

Kansas State will have the luxury of facing Baylor on their home field.  Since the Bears ruined their perfect season last year this will be a revenge game for the Wildcats.  Even though Baylor may have the more talented team the Wildcats will be the more motivated team.

Iowa State, Texas Tech and the last game of the season against Kansas will be the only other three games with almost certain victory for the Wildcats.  Playing at home against West Virginia should also be close to a sure thing, but it will all depend on how the Mountaineers defense performs without all the offensive firepower from last season.

The outlook for Kansas State is grim this season.  They lost their playmaker Collin Klein as well as their depth at the receiver and tailback position.  On the defensive side of the ball they are very inexperienced and without Klein making plays on offense that will be the factor that prevents them from repeating last season’s success.

They do have some bright spots remaining on the team.  Most of the offensive line was retained and John Hubert is back for his senior season as the Wildcats running back.  The new quarterback, Jake Waters will have some solid receiving options in Tyler Lockett and Tramain Thompson.

I don’t expect to Kansas State dominate like they did last season but their soft schedule should allow them to make a bowl game even though they lost all their talent on defense and their biggest playmaker on offense.  If the Wildcats can at least get a 1-1 split in back to back road games against Texas and Oklahoma State they will have a chance to finish towards the top of the conference standings.  However, they lost far too much of the talent from last season and finishing much higher than 6th place is a big unrealistic with so many question marks on this team.

As you would expect with all the injuries at quarterback, Maryland finish last in the nation in total offense (285 ypg). Not only did they struggle to keep their signal caller healthy, but they also cycled through four running backs of the course of the year. Big improvements are expected to take place in 2013. Senior quarterback C.J. Brown is once again penciled in as the opening day starter. Brown didn’t play a single snap in 2012, as he tore his knee in a non-contact drill during an August practice.

What a lot of people overlook from last year is the fact that Maryland had the 21st ranked defense in the country, as they held opponents to just 337 ypg. That was really an impressive accomplishment given how much they were on the field. Unfortunately for the Terrapins they lose six starters, including five of the top eight tacklers. A big concern will be who will put pressure on the quarterback, as they must replace 23.5 sacks from the players lost.

The Terrapins will have a decent shot at matching last year’s win total in their first four games of the season. They will be big home favorites against FIU and Old Dominion and are more than capable of getting a win at Connecticut and against West Virginia in a neutral site game at M&T Bank Stadium (home of the Baltimore Ravens).

Looking ahead to ACC play, Maryland likely won’t be able to pull off an upset on the road against Florida State or Virginia Tech and will likely fall at home against a very good Clemson team. The rest of the conference schedule are all very winnable games, as they catch a break by avoiding Miami, North Carolina and Georgia Tech out of the Coastal Division.

Road games against Wake Forest and NC State won’t be easy, but they figure to be favored in their three home games against Virginia, Syracuse and Boston College. There’s really not a lot that separates the bottom eight teams.

Despite a miserable 6-18 record in his two seasons at Maryland, I’m confident that Edsall will get this program headed in the right direction. There’s plenty of reason to believe that the Terrapins would have been headed to a bowl game last year if Brown hadn’t got hurt before the season started. While it’s not out of the question that this team could win as many as 9-games, I think a more realistic goal is to get back to a bowl game for the first time since 2010.

In order for Maryland to reach the 6-win mark they are going to likely have to pull off an upset or two on the road. They only have six true home games this year and only five of them are games where they can go in with the expectation of getting a win. For that to happen Maryland is going to have to take a huge step forward offensively, as I’m not sure they will be able to rely on their defense like they did in 2012.

When it’s all said and done, I think Maryland will go 5-1 at home with the only loss coming to Clemson and get that win away from home against a depleted West Virginia team in non-conference action.

The Cyclones managed to stay within a touchdown against Kansas State and West Virginia.  They also played a close game against Oklahoma but a late touchdown made that game seem more lopsided than it actually was.  The Cyclones generally play well at home so their win over Baylor came as no surprised.

The goal for Iowa State this season will be to make it back to another bowl game.  With quarterback Sam Richardson getting the starting position late last season the Cyclones have high hopes for an improved offensive unit.  They also returned running back James White who should have a big season with the center and entire right half of the offensive line returning.

The Cyclones have a difficult schedule this season, in fact it is the 21st most difficult in the country.  They open the season playing in back to back in-state rivalry games.  First they will face Northern Iowa followed by their biggest rival, the University of Iowa.  Preseason odds have Iowa State favored in both of those games.

When they open up conference play they will have a difficult task at hand.  The Texas Longhorns will come to Ames, Iowa as a 12 point favorite over the Cyclones.  They will then play back to back games on the road against Texas Tech and Baylor.  All three of those teams have a lot of scoring potential so it may be difficult for the Cyclones to keep pace.

The end of the season will not get much easier for Iowa State.  They are on the road against Kansas State and Oklahoma where the Cyclones are double digit underdogs in those games.  They will also play against TCU at home which will be another difficult game.  The Horned Frogs are expected to perform well in the Big 12 this season.

The Cyclones will end their season on the road against West Virginia.  If they reach the five win mark I would not be surprised to see Iowa State pull off the upset in this game.  There can be a lot of motivation for a team in the final game of the season when a win means their season continues.  West Virginia is not expected to perform well this season but preseason odds have them listed as 7.5 point favorites.

The Big 12 conference does not get as much respect as they deserve.  Oklahoma, Texas, Oklahoma State and Baylor are all very good teams that should finish the season in the top 25 rankings.  That much talent in once conference makes it difficult for any team to finish the season with a winning record.

Iowa State should finish around 7th in the conference.  I like the Cyclones to pick up wins against Texas Tech, Kansas and pull off an upset win on their home field.  That win will most likely come against TCU.  Those 3 wins in conference play should ensure a 7th place finish in conference play considering how bad the bottom half of the Big 12 will be this year.

Iowa State finished last season in 9th place with 3 conference wins and it will be interesting to watch this team evolve, especially the play of starting quarterback Sam Richardson.  Iowa State will have to replace two of the best linebackers in school history so there are some question marks on defense too.  If the Cyclones can fill those voids they will be a team that nobody in the Big 12 wants to play against.

After watching the best players in the world struggle to simply make par at Merion this past weekend, expect to see a lot more birdies at TPC River Highlands. March Leishman won here a year ago with a final score of 14-under 266 and 2012 was the hardest this course has played since 2007. It wasn’t that long ago that Kenny Perry set the tournament record with a 22-under 258 on his way to winning the 2009 Travelers Championship.

At just 6,841 yards, TPC River Highlands is one of the shortest tracks players will face all season. Outside of No. 17, a challenging dogleg left over water that was the third hardest hold of the entire season in 2012, there are numerous birdie and eagle opportunities. The greens at River Highlands average 5,500 square feet and are relatively slow, but players have traditionally struggled from inside three feet.

While the likes of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy won’t be in action this week, the field for the Travelers Championship is loaded with big names. Rose (+1250) is one of the players who will tee it up and he’s currently listed as the odds on favorite, slightly ahead of Hunter Mahan (+1300) and Lee Westwood (+1600).

For those of you looking to place a bet on who will walk away with a victory, here’s a look at the two golfers I will be backing to finish on top the leaderboard Sunday.

Bubba Watson (+1800)

Watson has struggled to get anything going since his 15th place finish at the Zurich Classic back in late April. In each of his last four starts he’s failed to finish inside the Top 25. This seems like as good as spot as any for Watson to get back on track. In six career starts at this event, he’s recorded three Top 10 finishes, including two in the last three years. Watson won here in 2010 and was runner-up to Leishman last year.

Rickie Fowler (+2500)

Fowler enters off a 10th place finish at the US Open, thanks in large part to an impressive 67 on Saturday that put him into contention. That broke a string of six straight starts where Fowler failed to finish inside the Top 30. I like his chances of building off that strong performance. Fowler finished just four-shots of the lead in his first career start at this event back in 2010 , which is a good indicator that this course suits him well. Look for Fowler to rack up a large number of birdies, as he currently ranks 25th in putting (per hole) and 44th in birdies per round.

As good as the Tigers have been of late, this could be head coach Dabo Swinney’s best team yet, as he gets ready to start his sixth season at Clemson. The Tigers return just 12 starters, but get back senior quarterback Tajh Boyd and electric wide out Sammy Watkins to an offense that put up an impressive 41.0 ppg a year ago. Watkins will need to bounce back from a bit a sophomore slump to make up for the loss of wide out De’Andre Hopkins, who led the team with 82 catches for 1,405 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Defensively the Tigers have been middle-of-the-pack over recent years, but it’s really been a non-factor with the way the offense puts up points. The loss of six starters, including four of the top six tacklers will likely keep the defense from making big improvements, but there’s potential for this unit to get better.

We are going to find out just how good the this Clemson team in the first week of the season, as they host a Georgia team that many think could dethrone Alabama in the SEC and play for a National Championship. Playing the Bulldogs early could work to the Tigers advantage, as Georgia returns just three starters on defense. Not to mention Clemson is especially tough to beat at home, where they are 54-14 over the last 10 years.

The Tigers could get tested early in ACC play in a couple road games at NC State and Syracuse, but those are two games where Clemson will be expected to win. The game that everyone is looking forward to is the matchup at home against Florida State on Oct. 19. That game will likely decide who represents the Atlantic in the ACC Championship Game. Clemson knocked off FSU 35-30 at home in 2011 and the home team has won 10 of the last 11 in the series.

Even if Clemson is able to knock off the Seminoles, there’s still plenty of work do be done. Back-to-back road games at Maryland and Virginia could be difficult, especially the game against the Terrapins, as the Tigers could be poised for a letdown. A home game against Georgia Tech is also no sure thing. The Yellow Jackets had a 31-30 lead in the 4th quarter at Clemson last season before the Tigers rolled off 17 unanswered for a convincing 47-31 victory.

Wouldn’t it be something if the Tigers went into their season finale against in-state rival South Carolina with a perfect 11-0 record playing to keep their BCS title hopes alive? Clemson will certainly be motivated for this one, as the Gamecocks came away with a 27-17 win at Clemson Memorial Stadium in 2012 and have won four straight overall.

Season Predictions

If it wasn’t for a couple of brutal non-conference games against arguably the two best teams out of the SEC East, Clemson would have an excellent shot at playing for a national championship. While it’s certainly not out of the question, I have a hard time seeing them beating both the Bulldogs and Gamecocks. On the bright side, I like the Tigers chances of running the table in the ACC and getting back to a BCS bowl this season.

Boyd’s decision to return for his senior season was a blessing for Clemson fans, as I don’t think he gets enough credit for just how good the Tigers are offensively. He’s shown the ability to make everyone else around him better and I think he and Watkins have the potential to put up unbelievable numbers in 201. At the same time, don’t be surprised if someone like junior wide out Martavis Bryant emerges into a star role. Bryant caught just 10 passes last year, but scored 4 TDs and averaged an impressive 30.5 ypc.

Clemson has a strong enough offense to contend with any team in the country, but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t concerned with the defense. Luckily they play in a conference that doesn’t feature many dominant defenses, which should allow them to simply outscore their opponents on a regular basis.

Fresh off of his U.S. Open win, Justin Rose enters the week as the odds-on favorite to win the Travelers.  Rose hasn’t played in the tournament for the last two years, but did score a top 10 finish (9th) back in 2010.  According to the odds, Hunter Mahan will be Rose’s top competition.  This will be Mahan’s 11th time at the Travelers where he has earned four top five finishes, including one win.  Mahan finished 11th last season, but has consistently played well at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut.  Another golfer who has played very well here in recent history is Bubba Watson, who won the tournament in 2010 and finished tied for second last year.

If you are looking for a couple of players with longer odds (and therefore better payouts) take a look at Brian Davis (50 to 1), who has two top 10 finishes over the last two years, or John Rollins (33 to 1), who finished 2nd in 2011 and 4th in 2012.

This course plays as one of the easier courses on the PGA Tour most years and I expect it to be the same in 2013.  Bubba Watson is a great choice here as this tournament is missing some of the top contenders in the world who have chosen to take the week off after the U.S. Open.  Rose will be the hot pick off of a hard-earned win in the Open, but you get more bang for your buck with someone like John Rollins, who obviously plays this particular course very well.  Who do you like to win this year’s Travelers Championship?

San Antonio

The Spurs were looking to rebound after a dismal Game Four that sapped the momentum of their blowout victory in Game Three of the series. After all, they ceded home court advantage back to the Heat and didn’t want to go down 3-2 in the series heading back to Miami. It turned out that all they needed was a simple change in the lineup to get back on track. Manu Ginobili became the first player to start a NBA Finals game after not starting during the regular season since Marcus Camby for the Knicks in the 1999 NBA Finals.

Tony Parker scored 26 points to lead five Spurs in double figures in a 114-104 win that gave the Spurs a 3-2 series lead but it was Ginobili that stole the show. Ginobili had 24 points and 10 assists, nearly matching the 30 total points he had in Games One through Four during the series. He spearheaded a 19-1 run late in the third quarter and early in the fourth that put San Antonio in control. Danny Green scored 24 points, knocking down another six three pointers. He set a NBA Finals record with 25 three points, breaking Ray Allen’s mark. Green has drilled 25 of 38 (65.8 percent) from beyond the arc in the Finals.

Tim Duncan added a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds while Kawhi Leonard chipped in 16 points for the Spurs. Boris Diaw made a major contribution; while he scored just one point in 27 minutes of action, he played tough defense on LeBron James. James was 1 of 8 shooting with Diaw as the primary defender. San Antonio lit up Miami for 60 percent shooting from the floor, 9 of 22 from three point range, helping overcome 19 turnovers that led to 20 Miami points in the contest. The Spurs won the rebounding battle by a slim 36-34 margin.

San Antonio currently is 3^rd among playoff teams in scoring offense, averaging 101 points per game. Parker leads five Spurs in double figure scoring averages with 21.2 points along with a team-high 7.1 assists per game. Duncan averages 17.2 points along with a team-high 9.7 rebounds, Leonard scores 12.8 points while grabbing 8.6 rebounds and Ginobili chips in 11.3 points while dishing 5.1 assists per game. Green adds 11.8 points a game but is shooting 48.5 percent from the field in the playoffs.

The Spurs could use some more production from Tiago Splitter and Gary Neal, especially with Parker ailing and Duncan seeing increased minutes. San Antonio is 5^th in the postseason for scoring defense, holding opponents to an average of 92.7 points per game. Offensively, the Spurs are 2^nd in field goal percentage, knocking down 46.9 percent of their attempts. They rank 6^th in field goal percentage defense at 43 percent.

Miami

The Heat find themselves in a situation that they aren’t necessarily accustomed to: their backs against the wall with no room for error at this stage of the game. Miami was put in that situation after a slow start to Game Five and then a 19-1 run that spanned the latter stages of the third quarter and the start of the fourth that put them in a hole too far to dig out of. Miami dropped a 114-104 decision and head back home needing to win both games in order to defend their title in a series where the teams have alternated victories thus far.

Dwyane Wade led four Heat players in double figures, contributing a double-double with 25 points and 10 assists. LeBron James also scored 25 points but hit on just 8 of 22 field goal attempts; he didn’t grab his first rebound until after halftime. Ray Allen contributed 21 points off the bench while Chris Bosh had 16 for the Heat. Miami got little to no production from Mike Miller and Mario Chalmers; the duo combined for a total of seven points. Chris Andersen didn’t even get off the bench as Erik Spoelstra stuck with Miller in the starting lineup and brought Udonis Haslem in as a reserve. The Heat allowed San Antonio to shoot 60 percent from the floor while they were limited to 43 percent shooting.

Miami currently is 7^th among playoff teams, averaging 97 points per game in the playoffs. Miami is 1^st in field goal percentage, knocking down 46.9 percent from the floor in the first round. James leads four Heat players averaging double figures with 25.1 points per game to go along with 8.1 rebounds and 6.5 assists. Wade contributes 15.6 points a night, Bosh scores 12.8 points and grabs 7.1 rebounds per game and Allen adds 10.7 points to the mix. Chris Andersen has stepped up with 6.9 points a game for Miami after averaging 4.9 per game in the regular season. Andersen leads all shooters in the playoffs in field goal percentage at 81.8 percent; he’s knocked down 45 of 55 shots.

The Heat could use more production out of key bench players like Shane Battier, Mike Miller, Norris Cole and Mario Chalmers. Miami currently is 3^rd in scoring defense, allowing opponents an average of 90.4 points so far in the playoffs. Bosh was fined $5,000 by the league Friday for his flop during Game Four. Miami’s Big Three will need to come up big in order to save their season.

Head to Head Matchup

This marks the first time that the Spurs and Heat have done battle in the postseason which means things are in San Antonio’s favor, 3-2, each at the moment. San Antonio holds a 34-17 edge in the regular season contests between the two teams, though the Heat has won the last four games between the franchises. Prior to that four game run, the Spurs had won 15 of 18 in the series dating back to March 2002.

Prediction

While conventional wisdom says that Miami should bounce back and win Game Six to force the series to a decisive seventh game. The Heat has not suffered back to back losses since mid-January and whether they were beaten soundly or narrowly in that stretch, they’ve found a way to recover the next time out on the floor. Now they’re facing a team that doesn’t get rattled and has the ability to recover from scoring binges by the Heat. Look for San Antonio to defy the odds here. Take the Spurs and the points in a game that goes over the 191 mark as they take their fifth NBA title.

The Yankees will have Phil Hughes getting the start today. Hughes is 1-3 at home in 6 starts and he has a 6.52 ERA in those games. He has managed an average of just 4.8 innings in those games and has given up 7 home runs. Those numbers are very bad for a pitcher throwing in front of his home crowd.

Head coach Jimbo Fisher must overcome the loss of 11 players to the NFL Draft, including starting quarterback E.J. Manuel. While that certainly raises some concern for the offense, the defense brings back only four starters. For most schools this would be a recipe for complete disaster, but for Florida State it’s just the way it is. The Seminoles have a Top 5 recruiting class over the last four years and have more than enough talent to fill the voids on both sides of the ball.

The expectation is for red-shirt freshman Jameis Winston to take over for Manuel. Winston was one of the top recruits in the country coming out of high school and could be this year’s version of Johnny Manziel. He’s got a big arm and the speed to burn defenses with his feet. If he can mature quickly, Florida State has the potential to defend their ACC title and potentially play for a National Championship.

Florida State will kick off their season with a conference road game against one of the newest members in Pittsburgh, before a couple of easy non-conference games at home against Nevada and Bethune-Cookman.

There’s a good chance the Seminoles will be undefeated when they go on the road to face Clemson on Oct. 19. Most believe, including myself, that game will decide who represents the Atlantic in the ACC Championship Game. Florida State rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit to beat the Tigers 49-37 last year, but the home team is 10-1 over the last 11 in the series. One advantage Florida State will have is they come into this game off a bye-week.

The Seminoles could get a bit of a test at home against what figures to be a very good Miami team, but the rest of the conference schedule seems very manageable. Florida State biggest challenge of the season could come in the season finale when they have to go on the road to face in-state rival Florida.

While Clemson and Florida are the two games everyone will be talking about, that’s not to say this team won’t get upset. Just last year they lost at NC State as a 16-point favorite.

Season Predictions

The Seminoles lost a lot of talent to the NFL, but I don’t think it’s going to hurt them as much as some might expect. Defensively I don’t think this team will miss a beat, which is a big reason why you see them as such big favorites in a number of conference games. The rest of the teams in the ACC just aren’t that strong on that side of the ball. Even if Winston struggles early, Florida State should be able to generate more than enough offense out of their running game.

Personally, I’m really excited to see what Winston has to offer on the field. I think he’s going to be a special player and one that could have this team winning a National Championship in his first season on the job. However, I’m going to take the conservative approach and pick the Seminoles to finish 2nd behind Clemson. This is the best team the Tigers have fielded under Dabo Swinney and they have already proven they can hang with Florida State.

Typically when a team goes just 5-9 ATS the previous year, you would expect to find some value on them the next season. I don’t know that will be the case with Florida State. I don’t think there’s near as much hype surrounding this team as there was in 2012, but there’s clearly a lot of respect being given. With an inexperienced team like the Seminoles, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were a good fade early on and a strong team to back down the stretch.
